      Some old people are oppressed by the fear of death. In the young there is a justification for this feeling. Young men who have reason to fear that they will be killed in a battle may justifiably feel bitter in the thought that they have been cheated of the best things that life has to offer. But in an old man who has known human joys and sorrows, and has achieved whatever work it was in him to do, the fear of death is somewhat abject and ignoble.   

译文：

       一些老年人因害怕死亡而苦恼。年轻人害怕死亡是可以理解的。当他们一想到自己在战斗中身亡，错过生命中本该给他们的美好事情时，他们一定会感觉痛苦。年轻人害怕死亡情有可原。但对已经历过悲欢离合，已履行一定职责的老年人来说，害怕死亡则有些羞耻和不光彩。

原文：

《楚庄王伐陈》

      楚庄王欲伐陈，使人视之。使者曰：“陈不可伐也。”庄王曰：“何故？”对曰：“城郭高，沟洫深，蓄积多也。”宁国曰：“陈可伐也。夫陈，小国也，而蓄积多，赋敛重也，则民怨上矣。城郭高，沟洫深，则民力疲矣。兴兵伐之，陈可取也。”庄王听之，遂取陈焉。

译文：

       楚庄王想要讨伐陈国，他派人侦查陈国。使者回来后报告说：“不能讨伐陈国。”楚庄王说：“什么原因？”使者回答说：“陈国的城墙得高，护城河很深，储备了很多的财粮。”

       楚国的官员宁国说：“可以讨伐陈国。陈国是个小国家，却储备了很多财粮，这是因为赋税沉重的缘故，所以老百姓一定会怨恨君主！陈国的城墙筑得高，护城河挖得深，那么老百姓的力气也用尽了。此时派军讨伐陈国，可以攻下。”楚庄王采纳了宁国的建议，于是攻下了陈国。
