对英语教学的实践与思考Analysis of learning content: After reading this short story. Two key words came into my mind,which is birthday and month. In this story we can see that it is about the dog Sam’s birthday. At the beginning of the story Amy didn’t know why the month December was marked in red. So as far as I am concerned this story is about the content concerning months and birthday. At the same time I can related this story to the content of Unit8 When is your birthday in the version of People Educational Press.one more thing should be mentioned in the whole teaching process I also set a competitive mechanism for students in order to attract their interests.

Steps Step 1: Lead-in
Some pictures about the short story made by my students. In the presenting process students need to concentrate on words about months. Meanwhile I will show them the story in Chinese. I will also ask students two questions: How many months are there in a year? Do you know the name of each month. Ok I will show you. Here is a calendar. And in the story a month was marked in red.
Step2: Learn the new words
Show the pictures of months and related important days in this month on the screen.
Teach the new words: when month birthday January February March April May June July August September October November December.
Read the words over and over again until the students can name each item fluently.
Step 3: Work on 1a
Ask students to read the words of month in 1a, the teacher should pay attention to their pronunciation. Students need to read aloud and then check in pairs.
Step 4: work on 1b
There are three conversations in 1b.
(1)students read the conversation and then circle the words of months.
(2)Practice the conversation with partner.
(3)Listen and number the conversations1-3
Step5: production
After practice the conversation students need to make their own conversation. But students should ask based on the story. I will give them an example first.
Eg. When is Amy’s birthday?
Her birthday is in May.
Then comment in time. After they can ask questions about the story, they can choose to ask other people’s birthday.
Step7:Retelling the story
Invite two students to retell the story and then comment
Step8:writing
By using story to lead in my class, after we did listening and speaking practice students also need to have a production so I will ask some students to write a story about month or continue to write the story. What will Amy’s family do after they knew the birthday of Sam.
Finally if time permitted the teacher can ask students to do a report about their continuation of the story.
