He was born in Greennock(格里诺克), a fishing village.
His father was really good at running a ship business.
He was a sickly boy in his family and had to receive education at home for most of his early years. So it became an significant part of his education to help his father in the workshop and he developed some basic engineering skills related to the use of tools and instruments to forge models.
When he was 18 years old, he went to London where he was trained as a professional instrument maker.
In 1757 he set up a shop near the Glasgow University(格拉斯哥大学) and repaired compasses, laboratory scales and other mathematical instruments for many scientists, some of who became his loyal customers and even friends.
Even if he didn’t have enough money to study at University, he displayed the inherent ability of self-learning that was considered as an important influence on his invention.
When he saw the Newcomen steam engine(纽科门蒸汽机) at first sight, he was soon fascinated by this old machine. Without any formal education, he started to research the principle of the steam engine and tried to fix the machine with his bare hands.
With his research and study in the machine, he found the fundamental reason why the steam engine couldn't work efficiently and came up with an design to improve efficiency.
His revolutionary solution to the efficient problem of the steam engine gained a great success and completely changed the development and prospect of major industries.
In order to show respect for his significant contribution, the unit of power is named after him.
