终于到第四章啦！其实整理笔记也真是蛮辛苦的。心里有点凉凉。

这一章有点点长，不过一如既往地好看。

he said, ‘not so very long ago there used to be thousands of people working in Mr Willy Wonka’s factory. Then one day, all of a sudden, Mr Wonka had to ask every single one of them to leave, to go home, never to come back.’

这里used to be是指过去常常做而现在不了。是没有be动词的，它和be used to do 不一样，后者是指被动，例如:This glass of water is used to drunk.

all of a sudden :abruptly

和它句式很像的all of a sweat则指满身大汗

they started sending in spies to steal his secret recipes.

这里recipe很容易和receipt搞混，尤其是读音，需要复习单词时多过几遍，一个是配方，比如在功夫熊猫和美味料理王中都出现了这个词，频率不低，后者是收据

recipe还可以用cook book 或者cookery代替，表示食谱，当然不是特别严谨。

‘And did they go back to their own factories and tell?’ asked Charlie.

‘They must have,’ answered Grandpa Joe, ‘because ...'

在上一章中小查理说到but there must be people working there.这一章则是must have done

must除了表示必须外，还 表示推测，After a long journey, you must be tired.对于现状must be

情态动词完成时则是对过去推测，The phone rang but I didn't hear it. I must have been asleep.

同时也可用can't have been(出自英语在用语法P56)

'And Mr Willy Wonka tore his beard and shouted, “This is terrible! I shall be ruined! There are spies everywhere! I shall have to close the factory!” ’

哈哈，这段笑死我了。因为说话又引用，所以没错，三个小逗号

另外I shall be ruined!表示我要破产了，我要完蛋啦，和下面出现的人们说But he’s finished now. It’s all over.是呼应的。

‘But he didn’t do that!’ Charlie said.

‘Oh, yes he did. …'

这里注意英文中不管什么问句，回答yes no根据事实即可，也就是是就是是，不是就不是。和中文不同

And suddenly, Wonka’s giant chocolate factory became silent and deserted.

注意deserted与甜点dessert的发音，是容易混的

Then, he shut the main gates and fastened them with a chain.

这里只讲en后缀的一个用法，也是本文出现的

v.，“变成”

shorten v 缩短（short）

darken v 变黑（dark）

sharpen v 削尖（sharp)

dampen v 使潮湿/沮丧（damp）

broaden v 加宽（broad）

sweeten v 变甜（sweet）

当然最后一个词＋er就是咖啡里的甜味剂了，记单词的时候可以有意识去记一些词团，近义词组，词根词缀，潜移默化还是很有用的。当然不用刻意去记，见着了就查一查认真看一看，偶尔复习复习就挺好的。

Not a soul went in or out, and even Mr Willy Wonka himself disappeared completely.我觉得可以翻译为一个鬼影都没有

Then something astonishing happened. One day, early in the morning, thin columns of white smoke were seen to be coming out of the tops of the tall chimneys of the factory!

column这里指柱状形的烟，它本身就有柱子的意思，更常见的还是专栏了。

And you can smell the smell of melting chocolate in the air!

哈哈，smell the smell真俏皮

磨砂玻璃这也是豹豹新学的词，查了一下竟然直接蹦出实物交易。

But there was no question at all,...

毫无疑问，固定句型。与第一章中出现的there wasn't any question of...是一致的。

另外一说question,往往两个词组容易混，一个是Out of question指的是“毫无疑问”

例句

Out of question,we will get on the next train.

Out of the question则是“不可能的”类似impossible.

例句It is out of the question to get on the next train.

And of course now when Mr Wonka invents some new and wonderful sweet, neither Mr Fickelgruber nor Mr Prodnose nor Mr Slugworth nor anybody else is able to copy it. No spies can go into the factory to find out how it is made.

第一次看到，nor …nor…nor…nor后面就近原则。原来还可以这样写

They come out through a special trap door in the wall, all packed and addressed, and they are picked up every day by Post Office trucks.

另外truck美式，lorry英式

Just then, Mr Bucket, Charlie’s father, came into the room. He was home from the toothpaste factory, and he was waving an evening newspaper rather excitedly.

be home回家

an evening newspaper有时候会说an evening paper

rather一般修饰负面词汇，像rather cold,rather difficult一旦和正面的词汇连用就不一样了

When we use rather with positive words (nice, interesting),it  means 'unusually 'or 'surprisingly'
