汉字（Chinese character）又叫方块字（square-shaped character），属于表意文字（ideogram，另一种文字是表音文字（phonogram））。
汉字分为独体字（integral character, single-component character）和 合体字（compound character, multi-component character）。合体字的的组成部分叫偏旁（component），分为形旁（meaning component）和声旁（sound component）。部首（radical）是表义的偏旁。
汉字由笔画（stroke）构成，包括基本笔画（basic stroke）和复杂笔画（compound stroke）。汉字的笔画具有方向性（direction），按照一定的笔顺（stroke order）书写。
汉字的基本笔画如下：
