At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, (Matthew 14:1 NIV)

and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” (Matthew 14:2 NIV)

Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, (Matthew 14:3 NIV)

for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” (Matthew 14:4 NIV)

Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered John a prophet. (Matthew 14:5 NIV)

Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” (Matthew 14:8 NIV)

The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted (Matthew 14:9 NIV)

When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. (Matthew 14:13 NIV)

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. (Matthew 14:14 NIV)

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” (Matthew 14:15 NIV)

After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, (Matthew 14:23 NIV)

and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. (Matthew 14:24 NIV)

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. (Matthew 14:25 NIV)

When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. (Matthew 14:26 NIV)

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27 NIV)

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” (Matthew 14:28 NIV)

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30 NIV)

Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. (Mark 6:1 NIV)

When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? (Mark 6:2 NIV)

They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them. (Mark 6:13 NIV)

King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” (Mark 6:14 NIV)

Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.” (Mark 6:15 NIV)

But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!” (Mark 6:16 NIV)

For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. (Mark 6:17 NIV)

For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” (Mark 6:18 NIV)

because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled ; yet he liked to listen to him. (Mark 6:20 NIV)

Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. (Mark 6:21 NIV)

The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. (Mark 6:26 NIV)

So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, (Mark 6:27 NIV)

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. (Mark 6:30 NIV)

Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” (Mark 6:31 NIV)

Then he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were completely amazed, (Mark 6:51 NIV)

for they had not understood about the loaves; their hearts were hardened. (Mark 6:52 NIV)
