Nowadays, when it comes to pharmaceutical companies, some hold that one of their responsibilities is to pour fund into researching medicines for underprivileged people, while others assume that their main responsibility is reaping profits. From my perspective, although it makes sense for them to make money, it is of greater significance for them to provide medicines for the poor by developing cost-effective drugs.

Admittedly, all enterprises essentially place much importance on maximizing profits and drug companies are no exception. Just like a household, a pharmaceutical company has certain expenditures it is responsible for such as payroll, insurance, rent, advertising and so forth. To be specific, being unable to meet payroll means employees will leave the company; not carrying insurance leaves the company open to liability; and, failure to pay rent means eviction. Consequently, striving for profits is indeed crucial.

However, apart from pursuing profits, pharmaceutical enterprises should bear some social responsibilities. First and foremost, investing in researching drugs for the poor should be one of their major social responsibilities. Once those medicines for common diseases can be produced and sold at lower prices, it is beneficial for the poor to enhance and improve their health status. Furthermore, there is an urgent need to develop affordable drugs to treat chronic conditions prevalent in the aged populations in poor countries, which is probably the most significant health care issue for the developing world.

More importantly, creating a new medicine is a long and rigorous process, and it can take up to 15 years to progress from a promising idea in the research laboratory through clinical development to a medicine receiving approval from regulators. Therefore, without a large amount money supported by pharmaceutical companies, it is extremely difficult to carry out the research. Actually, once the new medicine is developed successfully, pharmaceutical companies that sponsor the research will ultimately benefit from it.

In conclusion, besides making money, pharmaceutical companies should fund the research and development of medicines for people in poor countries, which is a win-win situation in the long run.  （338 words）
