在历史记载上，汉文帝和南越王赵佗来往两封信，阻止了一场战争。
According to history, a war was prevented by two letters between the Emperor Wen and the King of Nanyue Kingdom.

Letter from the Emperor Wen to the King of Nanyue Kingdom Zhao
皇帝谨问，南越王甚苦心劳意。朕，高帝侧室之子也。弃外，奉藩于代。道里辽远，壅蔽朴愚，未尝致书。高皇帝弃群臣，孝惠皇帝即世，高后自临事，不幸有疾，诸吕擅权为变，不能独制，乃取他姓子，为孝惠皇帝嗣，赖宗庙之灵，功臣之力，诛之已毕。朕以王侯不释之故，不得不立，今即位。
You have been working very hard. I am one of the first Emperor's sons with no status.So I was asked to stay in a remote area.Haven't written to you, I know that I have nothing excellent for living away the capital city. The Queen Lv swept to power for the first and the second Emperors passed away so soon.Thanks to the ancestors and the ministers, the Lvs family was completely defeated. I must be an emperor for I am the little son of the first Emperor and my brothers were killed by Lv, and I start working now.
乃者闻王遗将军隆虑侯书，求亲昆弟，请罢长沙两将军。朕以王书，罢将军博阳侯。其亲昆弟在真定者，已遣人存问，修治先人冢。
I know that you have written to General Long asking about your family members and dismissing two generals in Changsha. I dismissed one of them and sent people to protect your family in Zhending and to mend your ancestors' tomb (destroyed by the Queen Lv)
前日闻王发兵于边，为寇灾不止，长沙苦之，南郡尤甚。虽王之国，庸独利乎。必多杀士卒，伤良将吏，寡人之妻，孤人之子，独人父母，得一亡十，朕不忍为之也。
I heard you sending armies to Changsha which make the natives in those areas suffering, especially in your country. What benefits to you and your country? Strong soldiers and captains were killed, leaving their parents, wives and children alone. Get one thing and lose ten, I do not have the heart to make it happen.
朕欲定地犬牙之相制者，以问吏。吏曰：‘高皇帝所以界长沙者，王之地也。不得擅变焉。’今也得王之地，不足以为大，得王之财，不足以为富，服岭以南，王自治之，虽然王之号为帝，两帝并立，亡一乘之使以通其道，是争也。争而不让，仁者不为也。愿与王分弃前悪，终今以来通使如故。
I supposed to delimit boundaries with you.So I asked the officials. The officials replied that it is the land Changsha that in your management left by the first Emperor. I will not be more rich by getting your possessions ,so does my land. I accept that you could take charge in the south area.However you call yourself an emperor.There would not be two emperors in a kingdom except one died. It must be a fight for which the meciful would not do.I hope to bury the hatchet and keep connections as it used to be.
故使陆贾往驰谕告王以朕本意，王亦受之，毋为灾矣。因以上褚五十衣，中褚三十衣，下褚二十衣遗王，愿王听乐消忧，存问邻国。

Letter from an elder from Nanyue to worship your majesty.
蛮夷大长臣佗，昩死再拜上书皇帝陛下，老夫故越吏也，高帝赐玺绶，以为南越王。孝惠皇帝即位，义不忍绝，所赐老夫者甚厚。高后用事，别异华夷，出令曰：‘毋予南越金、鉄、田器、马、牛、羊、即予，予牡，毋予牝。’老夫处僻，马、牛、羊齿已长。自以祭祀不修，有死罪，使内使潘、中尉高、御史平凡三辈上书谢过，皆不反。又风闻老夫父母坟墓已坏削，兄弟宗族已诛泯，故吏相议曰：‘今内不得振于汉，外无以自高异于吴’，故更号为帝，自帝其国，非敢有害于天下。高皇后闻之大怒，削去南越之籍，使使不通。老夫窃疑长沙王谗谮，故发兵以伐其边。老夫处越四十年，于今抱孙焉。然夙兴夜寐，寝不安席，食不甘味，目不视靡蔓之色，耳不听钟鼓之音者，以不得事汉。今陛下幸哀怜，复故号，通使如故。老夫死，骨不朽，改号，不敢为帝矣。谨因使使者，献白璧一双，翠羽千尾，犀十座，紫贝五百，桂壸一器，生翠四十双，孔雀二双，昩死再拜，以闻皇帝陛下。
I am writing to worshiping the Emperor as a official in a remote area without anything excellent.The first Emperor sent me the jade and make me the king of Nanyue.The second Emperor is so just that he kept connection with me and support me with gifts. However,the Queen Lv swept to power,killing my family members and destroyed my ancestors' tome. The Queen also suspected my honesty and sent armies to attack my land. I was forced to be the emperor.I have been in Yue for fourty years, and have grandchildren these days.However, because I cannot be engaged in your country, I get up early and stay up late, cannot sleep or eat well. It is my fortunate to have your mercy to reconnect and make the rehabilitation of my family.When I die, I will not be worried. So I changed my title and never claim to be the emperor.I also sent people to give you the most expensive gifts here, worshiping the Emperor and showing my honesty.
