英文写作中，常常会遇到需要表达“比如”的地方。对于母语不是英文的我们来说，最习惯的是用“like”来表达“比如”。前段时间，朋友在阅读我的文章时，建议将“like”修改为“such as”。我查阅了一些资料，发现确实在一些语境下用“such as”表达“比如”要比用“like”更好。
最近这段时间，在阅读文献时，发现也有一些文章中在表达“比如”的时候经常用“like”。我看到这些作者大多也和我一样，母语是中文。所以今天我尝试总结了一下在需要表达“比如”的地方，该怎样区分使用“like”和“such as”，这两者的意思有何区别，它们分别用在什么样的语境下。这是一篇自己的学习笔记，可能它很初级，所包含的内容也并不全面，但我仍然希望这篇笔记对同样对这个问题感到些许困惑的朋友有些帮助。
The difference between words
1. “like”和“such as”的区别
“like”和“such as”有时候可以互换使用，但它们之间也有一些区别，但这些区别很小，所以人们常常忽略这样的微小区别。
（1）语法上的区别
从语法上来讲，“such as”可以用作副词，“like”可以用作副词，形容词或句子中的介词。 “like”和“such as”均可用于描述事物、人物和思想。
（2）语境上的区别
从语境上来讲，“like”和“such as”的区别除了“such as”用于更加正式的场景之外，还在于“like”和“such as”后所接的列举内容是否包含在所谈论的内容中。
“like”表示它后面所接的内容旨在作为参考的框架，以用于指明所谈论的事物组，但其本身（即所举的具体示例）并不一定包含在该组中。“such as”表示它后面所接的内容包含在所讨论的事物组中。具体可看以下两个例子：
例1:
- Style guides, such as The Chicago Manual of Style and The APA Stylebook, generally refrain from making a firm ruling on this usage.
例1中，用“such as”即表示“The Chicago Manual of Style and The AP Stylebook ”是“Style guides”的示例。
例2:
- Philosophy-based novels like Atlas Shrugged can change the way young readers see the world.
例2中，严格来讲，用“like”表示类似于“Atlas Shrugged ”的基于传播哲学的书，但并非一定包括“Atlas Shrugged ”这本书。也许这个例子太过专业，下面还有一个更形象的例子来自文献[1]，例3可以很好地说明“like”和“such as”的这种区别。
例3:
- a) My uncle is allergic to most nuts, such as peanuts, walnuts, and cashews.
- b) My aunt is allergic to most nuts like peanuts, walnuts, and cashews.
例3可以翻译或者补充说明如下：
- a) My uncle is allergic to most nuts, such as (and including) peanuts, walnuts, and cashews.
- b) My aunt is allergic to most nuts like (i.e., similar but not equal to) peanuts, walnuts, and cashews.

2. 注意事项之“such as”前的逗号
“such as”前面有时需要加逗号，而有时候不需要。从语法的角度来说，当“such as”及之后的短语是非限制性从句的一部分时，需要加逗号。在这种情况下，如果删除“such as”及之后的短语，这句话仍然有意义（具体如例4所示）。
例4：
- a) Instrumental music, such as classical and jazz, helps Jessica draw better.
- b) Instrumental music helps Jessica draw better.
例5:
- The clippings in Kristen's Funny Writing box include topics such as dangling participles, spoonerisms, and eggcorns.
相反，当“such as”及之后的短语是限制性从句的一部分时，不需要用逗号。在例5中，需要用“such as”及之后的短语来对从句“The clippings in Kristen's Funny Writing box include topics”的意思进行补充。
需要注意的是，有时一些作者也会有意打破这个法则，以避免句子中出现过多的逗号。
结语
本文介绍了用“like”和“such as”来表达“比如”后的列举时的区别，“such as”用于更加正式的场景，此外，“like”后所接的列举内容并不一定包含在所谈论的内容中，而“such as”表示它后面所接的内容包含在所讨论的事物组中。
但正如Cliff[3]指出的一样，如果过多考虑了两者的区别，会发现两者间的区别是微小的，所以在写作过程中一般并不建议过多考虑二者的区别。一些作家或者编辑已经在打破这些传统的规则，他们认为写作时，除了用正确的词语表达合适的意思之外，所选用的词语还需要与作者的文章的风格相一致。
