The apple of one's eye

I guess many of you may know the expression "The apple of one's eye". To be the apple of one's eye, you could understand like that. "To be the apple of one's eye", so for example:

Jerry(that's me) is the apple of his mother's eye!

Not my Dad, I think he likes my sister more. But I don't know. Jerry is the apple of his mother's eye! What does that mean? That means my mother cherishes me. She values me. I am the most import thing to her. (If my sister hear this, my sister will say "No, Jerry. I am the apple of mother's eye and I am the apple of Dad's eye.") "Yeah, My little sister! I like her. She is cool."

So, to be the apple of someone's eye means to be the most important thing to that person. Something that they cherish. It can refer to a thing, but almost always it refers to a person. Who is the apple of your eye? Somebody that you really cherish. When you see that person, immediately, you smile and you feel warmth and you feel love. Who is the apple of your eye? Do you have any children? Maybe it's your parents, your aunt or your uncle. Maybe it's your pet. Some people really love their pets.

It's a nice expression. But why do we say the apple of one's eye? Is there an apple in the eye? This expression goes to the Bible. It's a very old expression. One translation is a little person in your eye that means a little person in your body, in your soul, in your heart. That's the idea. That's the origin of the expression. It's a very old and great expression.
