One day I saw z from our club posted this book in the Wechat group, that is the first time I know it, and what catch my attention is the mark 'No.1 New York Times Bestseller', when I visit Bookcup the other day, I saw it again, and then I bought it, regarding the book for the 12th of our English Reading Club.
EducatedIt is a memoir. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, the author Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home.
I'm not really good at telling stories, and for the English Reading club event, if the book is a fiction or a story, I feel worried because I have no clue how to share the book. It's very hard for me to dig some humanity inside or ask some good questions for discussion. When I tell z about that, he asked me some questions which we discussed in the event, hearing all different perspective towards them, knowing people's opinion on the education topic.
Why you're here? What's your expectation about this book?
What impressed you most in the book?
Thinking about your own education, is there anything that you did to make a difference?
Even now we all work, do you think your education ended?
...
Some really good discussion going on, and at some moment that I feel I said some stupid things, I would blame myself not well prepared, well, I do like the ending of the book. It said the decisions I made at the moment were not the ones she would have made, they were the choices of a changed person and a new self. You could call this selfhood many things. Transformation. Metamorphosis. Falsity. Betrayal. I call it an education.
