-背景知识-
1. draw lots (抽签)
这里的lots的意思是“签子”，draw是之前讲过的“抽”的意思。所以draw lots 就是我们俗话说的“抽签”的意思啦。
另外“抽签”还有一种说法是draw straws，straws就是“稻草”的意思，现在也泛指其他能用来当作签子的东西。一般来说如果抽到最短的一根稻草，就说明你中奖了（也有可能是倒霉啦～）。

大家可能会觉得抽签仅仅适用于鸡毛蒜皮的小事上，但其实不然。
在2015年11月20日的美国密西西比州的众议院议员选举中，就出现了两人得票相同（各得4589张）而不得不用抽签决定胜者的情况，最后由运气较好的Blaine Eaton赢得选举。

-熟词生义-
1.「sharp」：在文中作形容词，表示“激烈的”，一般作形容词更多表示“锋利的，尖锐的”。
原句： The fight was short and sharp.
例句：He had a sharp quarrel with his girlfriend.
2.「game」 在本句话中，表示“博弈”。
原句：He was seeking a bigger game.
延伸：其实game作名词也可以表示“猎物”，
例句: As men who shot game for food, they were natural marksmen（射手）.
3.「awfully」在本句中意为“非常，十分”，是一个程度副词，相当于“very；greatly”.
原句：To die will be an awfully big adventure.
例句：Michael seems awfully confident.
-句子解析-
1.The rock was wet as a ball, and they had to crawl rather than climb.
在这个句子中，有一个固定的搭配，「rather than」，在这里表示“而不是”，他们并没有爬上岩石，而是匍匐前进。
其实rather than的用法超级多样。在这里，老师给大家详细理一下~
跟在情态动词would/will/should 后面，表示“宁可，倒不如做...”
例句: I’d rather than go there by air. 我宁愿坐飞机去哪儿
单独和would搭配使用。Would rather do A than do B表示“宁愿做A，而非B”
例句:I would rather stay at home than go outside
在表示宁愿做A，而非B时。还需掌握一个常用的短语：prefer to do A rather than do B.
例句: I prefer to ride the bicycle rather than take the bus.
2.All he thinks he has a right to when he comes to you to be yours is fairness.
注意这里的「he」是指的上文提到的every child哦，不是特指peter哦～
「have right to sth」 是一个固定的短语，指 “拥有...的权利 ”，这句话的主干是“ all is fairness”，“he thinks (that)he has a right to”整个是修饰all，即：他认为他所拥有的一切权利就是公平。
「when he comes to you / to be yours」 就是“当他（every child）接近你(to you)并和你真诚相待的时候(to be yours)。
这句话可以理解为：When he comes to you to be yours, all(he thinks he has a right to is)fairness.所以，整句话的意思就是：当他（every child）和你真诚相对（和你建立了某种信赖的关系）时，他希望能够得到的一切，就是公平。
3.On ordinary occasions, the boys would have swum alongside cheering, but now they were uneasy.
趁热打铁，再来复习一遍would have done表示虚拟的用法。
「would have done」表示“本应该做，而未做...”，常用于虚拟语气。平常时候，这些男孩本应该一边游泳，一边欢呼。但是现在，他们却十分不安。
我今天本应该阅读，但是我却还赖在沙发看电视。用虚拟语气给自己的懒惰造个句怎么样？
4.They had lost both Peter and Wendy, and were searching the lagoon for them, calling them by name.
在本句中，「search...for」是一个词组，表示“搜寻...，为了寻找”。他们正在搜寻环礁湖，为了找他们。Eg: He searched his pockets for his key.
「calling them by name」在这里表示伴随。他们一边搜寻，一边呼喊他们的名字。注意的是，叫某人的名字并不是“call one’s name”,而是 “call someone by name”,这和我们中文的思维有很大的不同。
再举一个文章中的例子：As they side by side, a mermaid caught Wendy by the feet.注意，这里是caught Wendy (by) the feet.所以下次，不是要直接亲吻脸颊或者打头，而是要通过介词噢~
5.While sitting on the rock, something touched Peter’s face, as if saying，“can I be of any use?”
这句话中，「while doing sth」是一个固定用法，表示“当做...时候”，这其实是while someone be doing sth的省略形式。当坐在石头上时....
「as if doing」其实在这里也是省略形式。原型为: As if( it was) saying...仿佛正在说...
「be of use」在这里是非常高级的一种表达方式。“be+of +抽象名词（比如necessity, benefit...）”就相当于“Be+抽象名词的形容词”。举些例子：
be of use=be useful;
be of benefit=be beneficial;
be of necessity=be necessary.
所以说，掌握句子的不同表达方式可以为你的英语写作和口语表达加不少的分数噢~
6. A funny thing / was that / the hat was such a great success / with the Never bird / that she abandoned her own nest / for it, and whenever Starkey came to the lagoon / he got really upset / to see the bird sitting / on his hat.
这段话其实非常富有幽默感。大家可以借鉴一下里面的表达方式。
首先，有一个「such...that」的固定搭配，表示“如此...以致”。有趣的事情是这顶帽子实在是太适用了，以致于梦幻鸟都要丢掉自己造的巣了。
「whenever」Whenever=every time=no matter when表示“每当”，每当Starkey来到环礁湖，他都会非常沮丧的看到梦幻鸟在他的帽子上孵蛋。
大家模仿着填个句：令人兴奋的是，每天读书是多么的令人愉快，以致于，我不再睡懒觉。每当我早起阅读完，我就非常的高兴，自己又进步一点点。
The ___thing is that ___ is such a pleasure that I don’t ___ , and ___ I finish reading in the morning, I get really ___ to see my progress.
