这是老友记第一季第一集中的一个片段，Monica约到了一个很受欢迎的帅哥 - Paul the wine guy. 朋友们都为她感到开心，Monica也满怀激动地迎来了他们的第一次约会。
然而不幸的是这个Paul是个渣男，专门欺骗女性。而此时可怜的Monica还蒙在鼓里。
今天我们就来看一下他们一起吃饭的时候聊了什么吧。

Paul:I know, I know, I'm such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started going to the dentist four and five timesa week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?
Monica: My brother's going through that right now,
he's such a mess. How did you get through it?
Paul: Well, you might try accidentally breaking
something valuable of hers, say her-
Monica: -leg?
Paul:That's one way! Me, I- I went for the watch.
Monica:You actually broke her watch? Wow! The worst thing I ever did was, I-I shreddedby boyfriend's favorite bath towel.
Paul:Ooh, steer clear of you.
Paul: 我知道，我是个大白痴。她每周看四五次牙医时我就应该意识到了。我指牙齿能有多干净？
Monica: 我哥正承受着这种痛苦，他一团糟糕。你是怎么熬过来的？
Paul: 你可以不小心砸烂她贵重的东西，如她的……
Monica: -腿？
Paul: 这样也不赖！我……我砸烂了她的表
Monica: 你真的砸烂过她的表？哇！我做过的最坏的事情是，我撕碎了男朋友最喜欢的浴巾。
Paul: 那我可得离你远点（玩笑话）
看完之不禁感觉，渣男果然套路深。上来先说自己被抛弃的悲惨经历，引起Monica的同情心。同时用这个来和女伴找共同语言。然后一步一步地换取信任。
唉，Monica还是把眼睛擦亮一点吧。

1. catch on 发现xx事情，理解，明白内容
例如别人讲话你没明白，就可以说
Please repeat what you said, I didn't quite catch on.
2. such a mess 形容状态很糟糕。除了形容人也可以形容事物，场所等等。
My life is such a mess我的人生糟透了。
He lost his temper when he saw the room was in such a mess . 当他看到房间里一团糟时，他发火了。
3. go through 指经历不好的事情
Get through挺过来，熬过来不好的事情
I went through a hard time last
year but I finally got through it.
我去年度过了一段艰难时光，但是我挺过来了。
4. go for 选择xx的口语化表达
比如当别人让你做选择时就可以用这个词组
Which one do want, the big one or the small one?
I go for the big one.
5. steer clear of xx 离远一点，躲得远远的
如说离吸烟的人远一点就可以说，Steer clear of the smokers.
