写在前面的话

这是第五期更新《看老友记学英语》了，又有好多小伙伴给我了很多正面的反馈，当然也存在一些问题。上期说到的建共同学习老友记的微信群的事，现在我已经建立起来了，感兴趣的小伙伴可以参照文末的进群方法和进群条件。建立微信群是为了更好地分享一些学习的音频和视频资料，大家也可以相互沟通，相互鼓励。不想入群的小伙伴也不用担心，简书上我会一直发下去的。再次谢谢大家的鼓励和支持，如果有翻译或者解释的不到位的地方，还是欢迎大家多多指正。

Joey: Hey,Paul!

Paul: Yeah?

Joey: Here's a little tip, she really likes it when you rub her neck in the same spot over and over and over again until it starts to get a little red.

译文：告诉你一个小秘密，莫妮卡非常喜欢别人挠她的脖子，在一个点反复挠直到开始发红。

解析和应用：over and over again, 一次又一次，再加一个and over强调重复更多次。如 I have failed over and over and over again in my life, finally, I won.

Monica: (yelling from the bedroom) Shut up, Joey!

Ross:So Rachel,what're you, uh... what're you up to tonight?

译文：瑞秋，你打算如何渡过今晚？

解析和应用：be up to的用法，相当于what're you going to tonight?

Rachel:Well, I was kinda supposed to be headed for Aruba on my honeymoon,so nothing!

译文：我应该在前往阿鲁巴渡蜜月的途中，所以，什么都不做！

解析和应用：Be supposed to在本剧中用到了非常非常多次，我们也可以尝试用这个知语来表达。Be headed for朝…方向去,可以是形容真正去一个地方，如上文，也可以形容达到一个抽象地状态：Chinese economy could be headed for a hard-landing。

Ross: Right,you're not even getting your honeymoon, God.. No, no, although,Aruba, this time of year... talk about your- (thinks)-big lizards... Anyway, if you don't feel like being alone tonight, Joey and Chandler are coming over to help me put together my new furniture.

译文：我懂，你没去渡蜜月。虽然阿鲁巴在此时……有很多……大蜥蜴，如果你今晚不想独处，乔伊和钱德勒要到我那儿帮我组合新家俱。

解析和应用：talk about 在这里有，提到xxx就会让人想到xxx的意思。feel like doing sth - 想要做…

Chandler:(deadpan) Yes, and we're very excited about it.

译文：对，我们都相当兴奋。

解析和应用：Chandler说的反语，惯用的搞笑手法。

Rachel: Well actually thanks, but I think I'm just gonna hang out here tonight.  It'sbeen kinda a long day.

译文：谢谢，但我今晚想待在这儿，折腾一天了。

好吧，当然。

解析和应用：两个短语可以学到。一个是hang out,有闲逛的意思，也有消磨时光的意思。It's been a long day.形容这一天过得很累，就像上了一天班，回到家就可以说，I’ll get some rest, it’s been a long day.

Ross:Okay, sure.

Joey:Hey Pheebs,you wanna help?

Phoebe:Oh, I wish I could, but I don't want to.

译文：好吧，当然。

菲此，想帮忙吗？

我可以去，但我不去。

解析和应用：下次有人想借你钱，就可以说- I wish I could, but I don't want to.

Commercial Break

[Scene: The Subway, Phoebe is singing for change.]

Phoebe:(singing)Love is sweet as summer showers, love is a wondrous work of art, but your love oh your love, your love...is like a giant pigeon...crapping on my heart. La-la-la-la-la- (some guy gives her some change and to that guy) Thank you.(sings) La-la-la-la...ohhh!

译文：爱就像夏日中的阵雨，爱就像美妙的艺术品，然而你的爱像一只巨大鸽子，让我生抑郁。

解析和应用：shower有沐浴的意思，也有阵雨的意思。Wondrous和wonderful长得差不多，意思也差不多，像孪生姐妹。Pheobe的“不正常”艺术。

[Scene:Ross's Apartment, the guys are there assembling furniture.]

Ross: (squatting and reading the instructions) I'm supposed to attach a bracket-y thing to the  side things, using a bunch of these little worm guys. I have no brackety thing, I see no worm guys whatsoever and- I cannot feel my legs.

译文：我应该用螺丝钉将托架装在侧面，但我什么都没有看见，而且，我的脚好麻。

解析和应用：bracket支架，worm guy螺母钉。联想到生活中去就能记住了。

(Joey and Chandler are finishing assembling the bookcase.)

Joey: I'm thinking we've got a bookcase here.

Chandler: It's a beautiful thing.

译文：我想我们做好书架了。

真漂亮。

Joey:(picking up a leftover part) What's this?

Chandler:I would haveto say that is an 'L'-shaped bracket.

Joey:Which goeswhere?

Chandler:I have noidea.

(Joey checksthat Ross is not looking and dumps it in a plant.)

Joey:Done withthe bookcase!

Chandler:Allfinished!

译文：我只能说这是个“L”型托架。

是哪儿的？

我也不知道。

解析和应用：'L'-shaped bracket，xx形状的xx, I just made a small heart shaped cookie for him.

Ross:(clutching a beer can and sniffing) This was Carol's favorite beer. She always drank it out of the can, I should have known.

译文：这是卡罗最爱喝的啤酒。她总是喜欢用听罐直接喝，我早就应该注意到了。

Joey:Hey-hey-hey-hey, if you're gonna start with that stuff we're outta here.

Chandler:Yes, please don't spoil all this fun.

译文：如果你再这样，我们就走了。

对啊，请不要破坏这里的乐趣。

解析和应用：Chandler的反式幽默，老友记不仅可以教会我们学英语，还能教我们怎么幽默地说话。

Joey:Ross, let me ask you a question. She got the furniture, the stereo, the good TV- what didyou get?

译文：罗斯，我问你一个问题。她分得家俱，音响和好电视。你分得什么？

解析和应用：stereo可以联想stere立方米来记忆。

Ross:You guys.

Chandler:Oh, God.

Joey:You gotscrewed.

Chandler:Oh my God!

译文：你们。

天啊。

你昏头了吧。

嗯，天啊！

解析和应用：screw up的用法，She screwed everything up,她搞砸了一切。

[Scene: A Restaurant, Monica and Paul are eating.]

Monica:Oh my God!

Paul:I know, Iknow, I'm such an idiot. I guess I should have caught on when she started goingto the dentist four and five times a week. I mean, how clean can teeth get?

译文：嗯，天啊。

我知道，我是个大白痴。她每周看四五次牙医时我就应该意识到了。

我指牙齿能有多干净？

解析和应用：catch on,理解，明白，注意一般不会说 catch on sth. 如Please repeat what you said, I didn't quite catch on.

Monica: My brother's going through that right now, he's such a mess. How did you get through it?

译文：我哥正承受着这种痛苦，他一团糟糕。你是怎么熬过来的？

解析和应用：such a mess,形容状态很糟糕。Get through,挺过来，熬过来。

Paul: Well, you might try accidentally breaking something valuable of hers, say her-

Monica: -leg?

译文：你可以不小心砸烂她贵重的东西，如她的……

……腿？

Paul:(laughing)That's one way! Me, I- I went for the watch.

译文：这样也不赖！我……我砸烂了她的表

解析和应用：go for 的用法，这里是选择了，用词非常形象。我们可以说 Let's go for music! 去听音乐吧！

Monica: You actually broke her watch?  Wow!  The worst thing I ever did was, I-I shreddedby boyfriend's favorite bath towel.

译文：你真的砸烂过她的表？哇！我做过的最坏的事情是，我撕碎了男朋友最喜欢的浴巾。

解析和应用：towel毛巾，bath towel浴巾。可以联想tower，塔，只差最后一个字母。

Paul:Ooh, steer clear of you.

译文：那我可得离你远点（玩笑话）

解析和应用：steer clear of 躲得远远的，如说离吸烟的人远一点就可以说，Steer clear of the smokers.
