My Olympic Hero
Liu Xiang, the most prominent track and field star, is my Olympic hero. He is a hurdler and Athens Olympic champion. When he won the men’s 110 meters hurdle final and got a gold medal in 2004 Athens Olympic Games, the crowd paid homage to him. As one of the greatest Olympians of all time, Liu Xiang topped the list of the 2004 Asian heroes chosen by Time Magazine's Asia version. Since then, he has loyal subjects far and wide.
However, owing to a foot injury in 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, he was forced to withdraw from the 110 meters hurdles. Some people started to blame him or question his abilities because they had no clue about how serious his injury was. However, I still believe that my hero will never give up and he will look to the future out of grit, guts and a burning desire.
After four years' waiting, in the 2012 London Olympic Games, all fans waited in vain and had to watch Liu suffer another painful Olympic exit, just like the moment when he withdrew from the men's 110 meter hurdles in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He drove his left foot into the first hurdle and tumbled to the track, grasping his lower right leg. Though I was fuzzy on the details of his injury, I was deeply touched by what I saw. My hero lay on the track, then rose and hopped toward the exit before returning to hop quickly up the track next to the hurdles on his left leg, symbolically finishing the race.
He was one of the architects of history because he won the gold medal, broke the world record and pulled off a monumental upset, which means that Asian people can also step to success in track and field. As a sportsman, he never gives up, no matter what kind of trouble he comes across, so it is not a coincidence that he has many fans.
What’s more, his sportsmanship sets a good example of the human spirit transcending one physical self. Although he had a foot injury, he tried to overcome it by dealing with incredible pain instead of giving up. That’s the greatest legacy Liu Xiang has given me.
Liu Xiang is the Olympic hero I look up to.
