【小年是啥】【what is it】
总的来说，小年的定义有仨：
In general, there are three different definition of the Minor Chinese New Year:
1.农历腊月是小建的年份，也就是说，农历腊月只有29天，没有年三十的年份。
A lunar year in which the last month has 29 days.
2. 小年通常在腊月二十三或二十四日，意味祭灶。
Festival on the 23rd or 24th of the 12th month of the lunar year, when sacrifices are made to the kitchen god.
3.指果树歇枝、竹子等生长得慢的年份。
Non-bearing year (for fruit trees, bamboo, etc.)

小年在各地日期不同。北方是腊月廿三，南方部分地区是腊月廿四，江浙沪把腊月廿四和除夕前一夜都称为小年夜；安徽北部和南京地区把小年和元宵合在一块,而西南和北方部分少数民族地区则又是除夕。
The time to celebrate this festival varies from place to place across China. In the north part, it is usually celerated on the 23rd of the Luna month, while in the south part it is the 24th and the night before new year's eve. In north part of An hui province and Nanjing, people combine the minor Chinese new year and the Latern Festival together. In the south-west part, where there is filled with minorities, the Minor Chinese New Year is celebrated on the Chinese New Year's eve.

1、【祭灶王】 【Offer sacrifices to Kitchen God】
为灶神烧纸钱，祈福来年灶王爷保佑。
Burning a paper image of the Kitchen God is seen as one of the most important convention on the Minor Chinese, as it can dispatchthe god's spirit to Heaven to report on the family's conduct over the past year. It is believed that the Kitchen God will oversee and protect the household for another year.
2、【吃灶糖 】【Guandong Candy】
Guandong candy, a sticky sweet made out of glutinous millet and sprouted wheat, is a traditional snack that Chinese people eat on the Festival of the Kitchen God.
3、【剪发】【get hair cut】
民间有"有钱没钱，剃头过年"的说法。沐浴理发的活动，多集中在小年前后进行。
As the old Chinese saying goes, “whether you are rich or poor, get a haircut before the Spring Festival”. The activity of taking bath and haircut is often taken on the Little New Year.
