3.29 Genes and backgrounds matter most to exam resutls

      基因和背景对于考试结果很重要，学校没有那么重要

经济学人报道：

在英国有一项研究结果表明：

  学生成绩好坏与选择学校的关系没有我们想象的大

  同时，该研究结果提出：学生所遗传的基因和父母所提供的家庭经济背景与成绩有莫大的关系

研究对象：

  1990——2000年出生的双胞胎，随机在英国选取4000对

研究过程：

  1 收集4000对双胞胎的基因和智力测验结果

  2 通过DNA 和基因数据测算，得出初步结论：

    通过测试进入学校的孩子比普通学校的孩子基因成绩普遍高，学校通过测试无意中筛选出了基因不同的孩子

  3 提出问题：是否是因为学校筛选的过程给了孩子一个学习成绩提高的动力呢？

  4 针对问题，根据基因、家庭背景和成绩调整调查的年纪，得出进一步结论：

    学校间差异变小，个体间基因差异占了8%

  5 最终得出两个结论

    I 很多与教育考试相关的基因并没有为人们熟知

    II 相对于经济社会因素，基因因素更加重要

段落阅读：

句式：when..., the difference vanish

意思：但是当那些成绩，和父母的教育以及工作职位一起，用来反映每个11岁孩子的测试结果时，不同消失了

2 Second, had the study also been conducted in a nation, such as Denmark, where wealth is more evenly spread it is possible that genetics would appear to play a bigger role in educational outcomes, because socioeconomic disparities would have a lesser impact.

disparity：不同=difference/distinction/gap

句式： it is possible....,because.....

注意：had the study also been conducted in a nation是一个表被动的状语成分，原句因为sb. have the study also been conducted，因为主语被省略，所以用had sth. been done

意思：第二，其他地方也进行了实验，例如丹麦。丹麦是一个更加富裕的地方。这样的实验（使得以下）结论得以成立：基因在教育成果中起到更加重要的位置，因为（在丹麦）社会经济差异是一个更小的影响因素。

3 The research does not appear to support a programme of “progressive eugenics”, as advanced by Toby Young, a journalist and a co-author of the study（原句为：as it was advanced by，省略it was，it指代前面的program，现在经常用as done作为特殊句型）. Mr Young has argued that poor people should be able to screen embryos for free on the basis of intelligence, if the technology to do so becomes available. Setting aside the obvious ethical questions, many of the genetic differences that might appear to contribute to social mobility (think smaller ears and larger bladders)（括号中的内容一般为解释说明，泛读时可以忽略，精读时需要仔细阅读） would not necessarily be associated with intelligence. Overall, the effects of such a programme would probably shift educational attainment by a few percentage points at best. That is small beer compared with the advantages enjoyed by the children of the educated and wealthy.

意思： 研究并不支持Toby（一位记者以及研究的共署作者）提出的项目：进步的优生学计划。Toby认为：如果筛选胚胎的技术可行， 穷人应该可以根据智力免费筛选胚胎。先不说明显的伦理道德问题，基因的不同（例如小的耳朵和大的膀胱）对社会稳定有一定的帮助，同时这些不同也与智力无关。总的来说，这一项目的效果也许会改变教育的成果，（但）最多就是很小的比例。这与孩子可以享受到的教育和财富来比，只是很小一部分。
