The history of Industrial Age shows us that the rise or fall of a country’s economy is closely tied to its relationship with nature. Industrialization, while generating unprecedented material wealth, has incurred serious damage to Mother Nature. Therefore, we should switch our current development pattern to focus on the harmony with nature and take on a more eco-friendly developmental path.
For many developing countries, their top priority is to put emphasis on promoting economic growth instead of protecting the environment. Their policy makers believe that ecological conservation is money-consuming and hard to reap benefits in the short term. In order to keep their positions in the government, they turn to choose a radical and brutal way to improve the national economy and people’s livelihood at the expense of destroying the nature. That is a cost-effectiveness option for these countries to quickly get rid of poor economic conditions, but damages to the environment will probably never be recovered.
Is there any method for countries to boost the economy and care for the environment at the same time? Maybe shaping an eco-friendly economic system is the best answer. Many countries find it high-budget to keep the environment sustainable, but what they neglect is that those protection measures could create more wealth than they thought. Natural reserve, for example, can promote travel industry to some extent. Besides, it can also improve the ability of nearby areas to resist natural disasters, which will prevent many houses, factories and other real estates from being destroyed or damaged, saving a considerable amount of repairing fund. Under proper protection, countries could capitalize on its environment to develop various kinds of industries and propel the national economy.
There is no either-or question between economic growth and environmental protection, both of which are co-existed. Rather than finding excuses to sacrifice the nature simply for benefits, countries need to put more efforts on exploring an environmentally-friendly way of development that is suitable to them.
