It happened about two years ago in the UK when I left for home I was asked by my landlady to throw away all the stuff I acquired for my rental apartment even though many of the furniture, beddings or household appliances were still in a perfect condition.
This experience of mine reminds me of a deja vu scenario. For instance, when we walk around in our neighborhood, we could easily see the dumping site or the pavement is packed with a multitude of disposable plastic packings, discarded fast fashion apparel, still very new domestic electronic gadgets, genine sofas or armchairs, and sometimes we could even see deserted used cars!
Undoughtedly, we are stepping into a society of one-off consumption which is very wasteful and disturbing.
The possible reasons behind this unsustainable phenomenon of our contemporary society are deemed as the following:
First, the development of technology hugely reduces the cost of manufacturing of the new products. Generally speaking, it costs way lower buying new products than repairing the old ones.
Second, people become richer and are capable of affording the brandnew extra consumer goods instead of keep using the old ones. What’s more, they prefer convenience more than environmental conservation.
Third, some industry’s profit seeking obsession much outweighs the environmental awareness, as a result, the manufacturing of the quantity of the rough and ready short shelf life commodity is given top priority. The quality, eco-friendliness and craftsmanship of the products are thrown into the water.
It is evident that a throw-away society is very detrimental for the mankind and international community. Because it might cause the enormous waste of natural resources and result in the irrevocable destruction of the eco-system we human beings’ survival rely on. For example, the unimaginable amount of non-degradable plastic waste we throw away daily may end up in the landfill, the river or the ocean and cause serious contamination of our environment and may even lead to the extinction of many endangered marine life when they mistake the floating plastic packaging as jellyfish or other food.
To settle these severe issues of throw-away rubbish, we could adapt administrative measures such as imposing high fines on the businesses which produce those harmful products or even implement a blanket ban on them. Furthermore, we could develop more advanced science and technology to solve the problem of plastic degradation once and for all. Last but not least, it is recommended that we utilize various means to arose the public awareness of environmental protection, the noxious effects of consumerism and advocate a lifestyle of simplicity, elegance and harmony between man and nature.
