This is the second book written by D.H.Lawrence I read. Last one is named Lady Chatterley's Lover. It is love between two different classes, here it is special feeling between son and mommy.
After reading, I think Lawrence had paid enough attention to couples' married life before making these stories, neither Connie (The heroine in Lady Chatterley's Lover) nor Mrs. Morel (The hero Paul's Mom) got enough care in married life, so the feeling they had had to their husbands changed, it also led to that the marriage was in danger.
Connie still had the right to start a new life with some gossip, Mrs. Morel chose to give more love to her sons that should be given to her husband, however, pitifully her first son William died of a sickness early. So the love that has a special name Oedipus Complex to the second son Paul became more unusual. It also made bad influence on Paul's relationships with women.
Mrs. Morel is a great and miseral mother. She was from upper class, if her father's cloth bussiness never became bad, she would not have married a normal miner with low pay which part of was spent on beer. In the surrounding, she still took after four children and bore the often drunken husband. In a way, she is great. Her sons also are her prides, they have good looks, and characters. And they all earned money for the family early.
All they did could comfort her, it did help her. But after William's death, its Paul who saved his mom and took her come back to life. She also fought for him, but he must leave her like his brother when he was old enough especially after he fell in love with some woman. It could be seen.
There are two relationships Paul went through. The one is an innocent girl, the other one is a married woman. The fact is that they both just could get the part of the love from Paul. He must hide something special to his mom, even I thought either Miriam or Clara would be his wife, for there just were Miriam and Clara around Paul, but the end is that he chose the art. As he said, suffering was life, after Mrs. Morel's death, he became a real man expecting to experience more like different lives that others are living, he also cried, they are tears of thanks.
There is space to let readers to think of. At Last the book troubled me, there still is confusion on my mind, I cannot understand the special love completely. But I Can understand the hero's last decision. He chose art instead of women, he also is fated to go through different women to know which one is right for him. As an artist, endless experience might be the passion that he does need. I cannot figure it out when he is true self, with his mom, or Miriam, or Clara, but one thing is very sure that Paul got different happiness and sadness from them. So he is a whole man. It is worth being happy.
The 78th article.
