as good as ≠ 和……一样好

昨晚，外刊群中有一位小伙伴对更新的双语文章里的这个句子提出了疑问：

The running of day-to-day operations, including supply chains and staff, were about as glamorous as stage management.

而日常的运营，包括供应链和员工，则如同剧务一般乏味无趣。

glamorous意思是：especially attractive and exciting, and different from ordinary things or people 特别富有魅力的；富于刺激的；独特的，比如：

glamorous movie stars 富有魅力的影星

a glamorous job 令人向往的工作

为什么到了这个句子里，glamorous就成了截然相反的意思呢？

这其实是一种反讽的手法，也就是我们平日里常说的“正话反说”。我们可以从下面这张图入手来理解：

as good as one's word 在词典里的意思是：obedient to one's promise; dependable in keeping one's promises. 守信用，言出必行。比如：

He was as good as his word. He lent me the books as he said he would.他言出必行。他说他会借我书的，他真的借了。

She said she would babysit and she was as good as her word.她说会照顾孩子的，并兑现了她的承诺。

但在上述这张图中，真的是在说“奥巴马兑现了他的承诺”吗？

结合后面的文字描述，这句话其实是一句反语，意思就是，男人和他的话一样不可信。

男人的嘴，骗人的鬼。

同样用 as adj. as... 来表示反语的例子还有很多。比如下面这个句子，同样出自《经济学人》：

Any day now, Hillary Clinton is expected to declare that she is running for president. For most Americans this will be as surprising as the news that Cinco de Mayo will once again be on May 5th.

现在，希拉里·克林顿随时会宣布将竞选总统。对于大多数美国人而言，这就好比宣布“五月五日节”将再次于 5 月 5 日那天举办一样，一点也不稀奇。

五月五日节本来就是在5月5日举办的，没有什么surprising。这个语境里，as surprising as也相当于是反语，要从相反的意思来理解。

所以，as adj. as ...究竟是表达“和……一样”的意思还是反语，完全取决于上下文。
