China's popular social media Sina Weibo has been asked by the country's Internet regulator tooverhaul[2]sections that carry "harmful content".

Sina Weibo was ordered tomove several portals offlinefor a week after spreading obscene and wrongly oriented content, the country'sinternet watchdogsaid.
Weibo is China's Twitter-like social media that claims to have about 361 million monthly active users as of June last year.
"Content of wrong public opinion orientation, obscenity, low taste, and ethnic discrimination continued to spread on Sina Weibo,"the Beijing office of the Cyberspace Administration of China[北京市互联网信息办公室]said in a statement late on Saturday.
"Sina Weibo has violated the country's laws and regulations, led online public opinions to wrong direction and left a very bad influence," it said.
In a separate statement, Weibo said it accepted the criticism and wassuspending key portals such as its hot search site andportal on celebritiesand their personal lives for a week.
The spread of false, illegal and harmful content on the Internet is a common issue facing countries around the world.
The government has beentightening controls overinternet contentas part of efforts to maintain "social stability," taking on"vulgar" and pornographic content as well as the unauthorized dissemination of news.
China's leadership has stressed building a "clean" cyberspace by providing more and better online content and putting in place a system for integrated Internet management.
China shut down as many as 128,000 websites that contained obscene and other "harmful" information in 2017, state media has reported.
