This was a Wednesday evening. The clock was showing 10:33. There was less than an hour and a half left until the next day came.

M finally finished his work that day.

He was not at the office but at home. In fact, he had come home more than 3 hours ago.

He started to grab some fresh clothes and set off to take a shower, thinking “Once again, no time to watch today’s drama. But the work is done. Good good.”

This was not a special day for him. To be honest, a special day for him means a day in which he doesn’t need to work overtime at home.

From Monday to Friday, it’s common that he needs to spend at lest one more hour to finish his work after he got back home.

And he usually cannot enjoy two full days of rest in the weekend. He always has some work to do.

So, if you calculate it you would find that he doesn’t have much free time to spend in a whole week.

And it’s pretty often for him to cancel some weekend plans due to his unfinished works.

And what’s troubling is that M doesn’t see this as a problem.

He thinks it’s totally natural for a young man to have such a busy period.

So, whenever he finds that he cannot finish his job within the office hours he would arrange them into his off hours without any hesitation.

And whenever his supervisor asks him if he can take some new tasks, it’s highly probable for him to say : "I can do it in the weekend."

M never thought about ending this lifestyle.

Instead, M sees himself as a model worker.

Because how could he not be when he is so willing to do everything and to sacrifice his own time? Isn’t this a sign of great devotion?

But the truth is that he is getting worse and worse as a worker.

He is becoming more and more inefficient, because he is always counting on spending more time to finish the workload at hand.

And in his supervisor’s eyes he is getting less and less reliable. And the supervisor already started to think about replacing him with someone new.

These are just the regular days of this job but he needs to constantly work overtime to make his works done. Then what will happen in the emergencies? Can he really handle what’s coming? This is what the supervisor is thinking.

And, to tell the truth, a colleague like this who barely has his own personal life is really boring.

    Yes, one’s work is endless.

You can always find some new tasks to do. You can always find some new reasons for yourself to spend more personal time.

But the workload you put in a day should have its limit.

A healthy working environment should have its right pace.

A competent worker should know how to manage his time.

Your time is finite, so is the workload you should handle.

If you are among those who constantly work overtime back home, you really should give it some deep thinking.

Is it because your efficiency is too low? Or is it because your working method is totally wrong?

Either case, your solution should be finding a way to optimize your working process, not simply putting in more time.

Of course, there is another possibility which is that people in your company generally work overtime at home.

If that’s your situation, then you are in danger.

Because this company, or even this whole industry is already stuck in a dangerous condition. Or it’s that your boss sees you people as mere disposable gadgets. It’s impossible for you to learn anything  valuable if this is the working environment you are in.

    Remember.

Working overtime at home is not a sign of devotion.

You are just sacrificing your precious free time, which is already scarce, into a meaningless abyss and getting old in a chaotic hurry.

There is no curler way of suicide than this in this world.
