Size matters when it comes to extinction risk

From the hog-nosed bat to the banana frog,some of the world's smallest and most endangered animals aren't exactly well known.

Researchers fear these tiniest of creatures are being overlooked in conservation efforts.

An international team made a data base of thousands of animals to look at the relationship between body mass and extinction risk.

A clear pattern emerged: animals at both ends of the scale face bigger extinction risks than those in the middle.

Human hunting threatens the heavyweights, meanwhile featherweights are losing vital habitat as land is cleared for development.

Scientists say urgent action is needed on both fronts to help slow the ongoing wave of extinctions.

先看标题Size matters when it comes to extinction risk.

Matter这个词比较常用的意思是作动词“要紧”，比如说“对于她来说,在这个世界上没有比孩子更重要的了”就可以说成The children matter more to her than anything else in the world.但是在出国考试中matter往往表示“物质”，因为常常涉及到科普文章，“质子是物质的基本粒子”A proton is an elementary particle of matter.

另外一个需要特别注意的是词组when it comes to…指“当谈论或提到…时”在大学考试写作中可用，比如在降健康话题时“当提到饮食和运动的时候，我们都知道怎么去做，但是我们不会按照我们知道的去做。”即When it comes to diet and exercise, we know what to do, but we don't do what we know.

作者用第一句话讲述一个常见的现象：人们对体型最小的濒临灭绝的动物实际上知之甚少。在这里大家不需要去纠结hog-nosed bat和banana frog，它们就是两种动物，在阅读外刊或考试的时候知道是一种蝙蝠bat和一种蛙frog即可，毕竟咱们不是学生物的。

第二句：上述现象导致的直接后果就是人们overlook的它们所面临的危险。这里的overlook指的是neglect忽略的意思；overlook还有监督的意思即等于oversee，但第二个意思并不常见，就算在GRE考试中overlook常考的意思还是忽视neglect。

另外conservation是保护protection的意思如“四国保护大象的地区性会议”a four-nation regional meeting on elephant conservation；而reservation侧重保留save“我要给饭店打个电话预订座位。”I'll call the restaurant and make a reservation.；但preservation强调keep保持如：“这些绘画保存得非常好。”The paintings were in an excellent state of preservation.

第三句：引出最近的一项研究，人们开始关注动物体型mass与濒临灭绝之间的关系。这里的mass指“（物理）质量”，另一个常见意思是“人民群众”如“周杰伦的音乐走商业化路线，针对的是一般大众”Jay’s music is commercial. It is aimed at the masses.

第四句乃是研究的结果，研究人员发现了一个规律即pattern，pattern原意指“有规律、重复出现的图案”引申为“规律”。

emerge本意表示“出现”即appear；比较偏僻但是在出国考试中常见的有“（从困境或不好的经历中）摆脱出来”如“有越来越多的证据表明经济终于开始摆脱萧条。”即There is growing evidence that the economy is at last emerging from recession.

emerge还可表示“显露、脱颖而出”如“越南已跃居世界第三大稻米出口国。”Vietnam has emerged as the world's third-biggest rice exporter.

另外Scale的含义比较抽象，表示“范围，程度”结合文章at both ends of the scale指动物体型size或体重mass的两个极端即特大型动物和微型动物。科学家发现的规律即大型动物和微型动物最容易灭绝。

第五句交代原因：大型动物heavyweight受到捕猎的影响严重，而微型动物featherweight的栖息地受到极大威胁。在此需要指出的是，在考试中和外刊阅读中会出现大量的合成词，如featherweight。我的建议是先从左往右翻译，不行就从右往左翻译，绝大多情况是能大致知道其含义而不影响阅读的。比如下面这两个GRE常考词汇hearsay道听途说即听说（从左往右翻）；aboveboard光明正大的即放在台面上（从右往左翻）。

最后一句为呼吁：人们要对这两种动物给予足够的关注。ongoing即continuing持续的。
