Now a similar movement is under way before our eyes. The relations of production and exchange of the bourgeoisie, the relations of ownership of the bourgeoisie, the modern bourgeoisie society, which once seemed to have created by magic such vast means of production and exchange, was no longer able, like a sorcerer, to dominate the evil which he had conjured up by magic. The history of industry and commerce for several decades is nothing more than the history of the modern productive forces against the modern relations of production against the relations of ownership as the condition of the existence of the bourgeoisie and its rule.
Suffice it to point to the commercial crisis which, in its periodic repetition, increasingly threatens the very existence of the whole of bourgeois society. In business crises, it is always the case that not only a great part of the products made is destroyed, but also a great part of the productive forces that have been made.
During the crisis, a social plague that would have seemed absurd in all previous eras, the plague of overproduction, occurs. Society suddenly finds itself back in its momentary barbarism; It was as if a famine, a general and destructive war, had deprived society of all its means of subsistence; It was as if industry and commerce had been destroyed. What is the reason? Because there is too much civilization, too much means of living, too much industry and commerce. The productive forces possessed by society can no longer promote the development of bourgeois civilization and bourgeois ownership relations. On the contrary, the productive forces have become too strong for this relation, and have been hindered by it; And the moment it sets out to overcome these obstacles, it throws the whole of bourgeois society into chaos and threatens the very existence of bourgeois ownership. The relations of the bourgeoisie have become too narrow to contain the wealth which they themselves produce. What means does the bourgeoisie have to overcome this crisis? On the one hand, much of the productive capacity had to be wiped out, and on the other, new markets had to be seized and old markets made more complete use of. How on earth is this a method? It is only a way for the bourgeoisie to prepare for a more comprehensive and violent crisis, and to have fewer and fewer means of preventing it.

But the bourgeoisie has not only forged weapons that will kill it; It also produces the people who will wield this weapon -- the modern worker, the proletarian.
