-NARRATOR: When I was alive I maintained many different identities.

alive: 活着的 maintain: 保持 identity: 身份

我活着的时候,我有不同的身份。

Lover, wife and ultimately victim.

lover: 情人 ultimately: 最后 victim: 受害人

情人,妻子,最后成为牺牲者

Yes, labels are important to the living, they dictate how people see themselves,

label: 标签 the living: 活着的人们 important: 重要 dictate: 规定,要求

是的,标签对活着的人非常重要,标签决定了人们该如何看待自己,

like my friend Lynette. She used to see herself as a career woman, and a hugely successful one at that.

used to: 过去常常 career woman: 职业女性 hugely: 非常

就像我的朋友Lynette那样。以前她给自己的定位就是职业女性,她确实在事业上很成功。

-NARRATOR: She was known for her power lunches….

be known for: 因…而众所周知 power: 力量

….Her eye catching presentations….

….And her ruthlessness at wiping out the competition

-NARRATOR: But Lynette gave up all that to assume a new label.

The incredibly satisfying role of full time mother

-LYNETTE: Scavo residence…yes, this is me…

-NARRATOR: But unfortunately for Lynette this new label frequently fell short of what was advertised.

unfortunately: 不幸的 frequently: 经常地

fall short of: 达不到,不符合 advertised: 等广告的

很不幸对Lynette而言,这个新角色并不像所宣称的那样好。

-LYNETTE: How in the world did they?

in the world: 到底

他们到底做了什么……?

-TEACHER: I left the door to the art supply cupboard open for five minutes, that’s all. Five minutes.

-LYNETTE: Well, the little girl,Why didn’t she say anything?

那个小女孩,那个小女孩为什么没喊叫?

-TEACHER: Your boys work quickly

work: 工作,操作 quickly: 快

你儿子动手太快了。

-LYNETTE: Well, obviously they will be punished for this. Severely.

obviously: 明显地 punished: 被惩罚 severely: 严肃地

事实上,很明显他们应该为此事而受到严厉的惩罚。

-TEACHER: I hesitate in brining this up, seeing as you got so ugly about it the last time

hesitate in: 犹豫 bring up: 提起 ugly: 丑陋的

-LYNETTE: They don’t have attention deficit disorder, and I’m not going to drug my boys just to make your job easier.I’d rather change teachers.

attention: 注意 deficit: 缺乏 disorder: 混乱 attention deficit disorder: 注意力缺乏症drug: 使服药would rather: 宁愿,宁可

他们没有注意力缺失紊乱症,我不会喂我的孩子吃药,就为了使你的工作容易点,我宁愿换老师。

-TEACHER: The boys are in my class because I’m the only teacher that can handle them.

handle: 对付

你的孩子之所以留在我班级,就是因为只有我才能对付他们。

-LYNETTE: What if we separate the twins? Put them in different classes?

what if: 如果…怎么样 separate: 分开 twins: 双胞胎

或者我们可以把他们分开来?或许我们可以把他们分到不同班级去?

They’re much calmer when they’re not bouncing off one another.

calm: 平静的 bounce off: 弹开,反弹

他们如果没有待在一起会比较乖一些。

-TEACHER: We can try that. But if it doesn’t work, we may no longer be able to accommodate them.

work: 产生效果 no longer: 不再 be able to: 能,会 accommodate: 接纳

我们可以试一下,但是如果这么做还是不行的话,可能就没有人再愿意教他们了。

-NARRATOR: It suddenly occurred to Lynette that her label was about to change again.

suddenly: 突然 occur to: 被想起 be about to: 即将

Lynette 突然意识到,她的角色又变了。

And that for the next few years she would be known as the mother of the boys who painted Tiffany Axtelrod blue.

be known as: 被认为是 paint: 刷

接下来的几年,她会被人们熟知,作为那两个把Tiffany Axelrod染成蓝色的孩子的母亲。
