His name is Diego, a common name for a common boy. Fortunately he lives in the animal farm, just one station away. Floor one, underground, room 082. When I’m knocking at the door, I still wondering how he should looked like.
“Hi, I’m a friend of Salix, he told me you live here.” He’s a tall guy with pale skin but moderately muscular, round glasses, looks extremely amiable when he smiles. I was invited into his temporary cell.
“He wanted to give you this.” I hand out a bottle of red wine, this is only an excuse for visiting him. We talked something about Salix because he’s the only person that connects us. Then I knew that Salix only wrote to him once, plausible; that he thinks Salix is a strange friend, of course; that he’ll get back to Argentina one day before the games end, yes I’ll tell him that. My purpose reached, I should leave right now.
“Hum... I see. Actually I still have something for tonight, yeah, I think I should leave.” “You’re going to the bar?” This is out of my plan, “hum... I think so.”
He’s coming with me, how could I reject him rudely? I’ve never been to any bars in Southpole myself, not good, not good. We have to walk because he only takes free bus between the animal farm and the stadium. I have to get rid of him.
“Actually I’m going to a gay pub.” “Em-hum.” Not working, and I lead myself into a dangerous place, what if there’s no such bar? “Do you know Glory-Glory?” “Are we going there?” I remember Chun told me it’s just behind the cinema. “Yeah.”
“Are you his boyfriend? I suppose you’re gay.” I just nod, no words come out of my mouth. “So... he’s gay. I never knew.” “What are you trying to say?” He looks out at the darkness outside the tunnel, he’s wordless now. This silence is embarrassing, like a blank space in front of me, I’ll never know what’s in his mind. I don’t dare to ask, and I should lie to him.
“You should write to him.” “I don’t know where he lives. Do you?” Then I lied, I told him I have no idea, if Salix writes to me about that I’ll let him know.
We walked very fast, half an hour later we’re at the cinema. Unexpectedly, Glory-Glory is a quiet place, red lights everywhere. Some people are sitting alongside the counter, they don’t make noise, and the music is as weak as mosquito humming. We picked our seats in the corner near the front door, the grounded glass reflects the red light, giving me an illusion that we’re in a sauna room.
“This is not a gay pub.” He raises his eyebrows. I’m cornered, no place to give in. At this time some girls and guys are streaming out from the doors behind the long counter, laughing loudly, some of them are prostitutes.
He stands up and waves his hand at me, “okay, I’ll leave you here, see you later,” and left without looking back. He doesn’t even know my address, and doesn’t care to know. At this moment I know that maybe this is why he made Salix crazy about him. Never judging, always cooperating and following, most deadly, leaving blank spaces. Seemingly he cares about you, actually never tells you how he feels, then you don’t know he likes you or not, in the guessing, swaying between “he does” and “he doesn’t”.
“Can I help you?” A lady about 30 sat where Diego was, I couldn’t judge anything just from her appearance, this is my weakness point. “I am waiting for someone, guess he stood me up again.” “Pick one from us, see with your eyes, better than any appointments.” Her eyelashes flickering with anticipation. “No?” She’s not about to give up, “it’s cold outside, you need a warm body,” a piece of cardboard filled with photos was placed on the table, “the other side are boys,” and she flips it, “you know? These artless boys and girls are waiting in their cold rooms, in lonelinessesesess....”
I don’t know why but it works instantly, some of them looked really nice and warm. “How much?” “It depends on you, on how deep you’re into them, it’s free if you’re willing to develop a relationship,” she leans forward pretending a private conversation, “they need connections to survive in this cold reality.”
I leave the pub without a second thought. She calls at my back, “boy, I was joking.” Joking... it makes me wonder if right now she thinks the same like what I thought when Diego took his leave. In fact I had great interests in those boys, what’s hiding in their beautiful skin? But I resisted the temptation.
