Singing Snowberg

Chapter Six

Olympic <4>

“Dear Salix,
'' I’m in our room writing this for you, I’m not sure whether I should tell you that yesterday I was with Sunder, that Japanese girl. We had a very good time, she even fed me a drop of “desire potion”, and I masturbated for her in her room. If you couldn’t accept this please tell me. I’m so lonely here, the volunteer job is nothing more than moving things, plaster posters, printing pamphlets. I wish I could watch some of the games, especially the figure skating. Hope you’ll come back soon, Diego will leave one day before the games end. I don’t like him, but he seems so lonely, maybe you should write to him, after all, he needs a real friend. After all, you have me. Love you.
'' yours Cyano”

“Are you sure we’re doing this way?” His eyebrows are raising, “maybe it’s upside down.” We’re plastering nation flags of all countries. “Anyway it’s just an island. Oh, look!” There’s a nation flag on the other side of the field, on top of the pole, flaccidly swaying in the breeze.
“The stadium is too big, can’t see clearly. I’ll go and have a closer look.” “No no let me, I was an alternate Runner once or twice.” If it’s a Japanese or the Great Britain nation flag it would be easier.
“The tip... I mean the tentacle-like side should be at the left.” This is our no... their nation flag, Southpole nation flag. Devo is my partner for now. I didn’t know how we got together, maybe we both have the same inclination. That day when we were allocated by our freewill, we were sitting together, and we both chose a job title called: Miscellaneous. No need for advanced training. “I could experience many types of works.” That’s his reason.
At noon, I’m sleeping on the canteen table. “Here.” He claimed a portion of lunch for me, and going back to get his. I really don’t have the mood right now, even the fingers. This state of my body reminds me of that hiking trip to the frost forest.
“Thank you, for the snack and the plant.” “Oh... why picking it up right now?” “I thought you think I’m rude because I never said anything about that. I should be very grateful.” “I don’t mind how you judge what I do, so I don’t care if you’re grateful.” This is super straightforward. “And people don’t have to say it, right?” I’m muted by his words. Is this how a Chinese shows his anger? If I don’t say how could you know what I’m thinking?
“I got free film tickets this morning from our supervisor, such a nice man. Wanna watch a film?” I tried to speak naturally. He gives me a shining look, like a diamond. He’s interested, but his words are calm, “what do we watch?” I think he treats this invitation as a sorry.
In the theatre there’re just two films to choose. “Cien años de soledad. One hundred years of solitude. We watch this one.”
Actually I regretted, I knew what effect it’ll create on me. I remember how I felt when I read the book that Aliciasa brought back from the library, she and me both felt nothing, novels are novels, stories. But if she’s able to grow up with me, I guess she’d cry out loud, maybe not, however there’ll be something different coming from our body. Time is a magical beast indeed, when someone in the movie said, “the past is false, memory is a road of no return”, I should’ve known my weakness was kicked. Time swallowed everything happened before, in fact everyone has nothing in the “right now”, that beast creates true equality though not everyone could see, about equal loneliness; the true illusion is how we believe we’re different from each other. So when we look back the past, where we’re not equal, where all illusions exist.
The whole night was already ruined beforehand. I could’t stop thinking about Salix, and I could’t remember what Devo said to me. “Excuse me, what were you saying?” “Nothing.” “You asked me a question?” “Yes, but it doesn’t matter.” We smoked at the backside of the cinema, our clothes were catching the red and blue. I was perplexed whether to invite him to my cell, on the one hand Salix is the past and the past is a phantom, on the other hand I shouldn’t forget the past.
In the end I chose my left hand. “Do you want a drink at my place? The bars... are expensive.” “Okay.” I couldn’t believe my ears, he’s easy.
I don’t know if I cleaned my room deliberately for tonight, but it looked just perfect, I’m prepared for his coming. Several bottles of beer, artificial sunlight, music with sea waves, this is like a date. “You have new musics.” “Salix bought them for me.” “Oh... Salix, how is he?” “He’s at Ushuaia on vacation.” “Good, your boyfriend?” I shake my head and take a gulp.
