In Alice Notley’s poem “At Night, the States”, she used simple words and wrote very clearly about what she wants to tell the reader and what this poem means, for example “At night the states I forget them or I wish I was there in that one under the stars.\ It smells like June in this night so sweet like air.\ I may have decided that the states are not that tired or I have thought so.\ I have thought that.” At the beginning of her poem, she look at the sky then tell the reader about missing someone in her life, as we know people easily feel lonely in the night time. She looks at the stars and it makes her think of her love one, she writes like this way: “Honey, I think that to say is in light. Or whoever. We will never replace you. \We will never replace you. But in like a dream the floor is no longer discursive to me it doesn’t please me by being the vistas out my window, \do you know what of course （not） I mean? I have no dreams of wakefulness.\ In wakefulness. And so to begin. (my love.)” I heard Alice Notley’s voice in the poem, most lines she writes look like she says “I miss you so much my dear lover”, when night time comes she feels lost. Her poem is all about her love story and she cannot forget from the past, she tells the reader: “lost my way though perhaps they did (did they)and now he is dead but you you are not. Yet I am this one, lost again? Lost &found by oneself who are you to dare sing to me?” She put personal love story in her poem which allows her message to be strong send to the reader.
Alice Notley’s poem is very long, it is smooth and line by line over flowing very well to keeping tell the reader in her deep heart love story, she writes difference things to build up theme to let reader know how sad she feels lost in her lonely time. She writes, “At night the states I let go of, \have let, \don’t let some, \and some, \in Florida,\ doing, \what takes you so long? \I am still with you in that part of the part, \and vice will continue, \but I’ll have a cleaning Maine. \Who loses these names loses.” In this quotation, she wrote every detail about remembering her loved one. More and more I read her poem, I kind like her writing style, then I try to learn from her writing style.
the difference of my poem is talk about my mom with me when I was a young girl until right now. I miss her so much, sometimes make me cry, I put all my feelings in my poem like this way: “When I feels tired,\ mom holds my hand to make me feel comfortable,\Looking back on my life, she gives me so many sweet moments, \no matter if her stays home or travels she likes to help everyone. \She is my hero. \We are together see the world,\ She prepares everything for the travel, \when I feels tired, She holds my hand to make me feel comfortable.” I hope if someone reads my poem who could see a sweet story about mother and her girl. I want to write a poem get idea from Alice Notley’s poem,but learning is long practice process. I need write more and more poems, and keep reading her poem to see how she organizes her poem in nice way.
I enjoy read her poem and found out her poem style is in unique way, like fold thing in the words, such as easy way to show her love to the readers, according to her poem: “Oh call my name, \and if I call it out myself to you, \call mine out instead as our poets do will walk on by? \I have loved you for so long. \You died and on the wind they sang your name to me, but you said nothing.” From this quotation she clearly show her love to reader, she used “wind” and “sang your name to me, but you said nothing.” She gives us full expression of her love feeling in the poem. I wish I can write my poem like this way, but I only can tell what I think about. Compare her poem I write my poem all about sweet moment that will follow me anywhere I go. I have full of my sweet moments in my mind, also I miss my mom so much. how to put all the information together to show itself in the nice way, that’s the different from my poem and Alice Notley’s poem, her poem on top the mountain, my poem under the bottom mountain, only way to get my gold is work hard.
