Although there is a general perception that younger parents may have more energy to keep up with infants and toddlers while older parents have more experience to care for kids, nowadays, in the areas where late marriage and late childbirth are advocated, compared with the past, the age gap between parents and children is widening.

Actually, throughout the industrialized world, there has been a delay in childbearing age. From my perspective, this delay in having kids might have a negative physical and psychological impact on both parents and children. As the age gap widens, so does the generation gap. As a consequence, greater age gap between parents and children will bring about more disadvantages than advantages.

To begin with, there is a certain correlation between older mothers and birth defects including an increased risk of premature birth, and low infant birth weight. Besides, according to a scientific study, having an older father is associated with subtle impairments in neurocognitive outcomes during both infancy and childhood. Moreover, the percentage of the increase in autism is linked to older fathers.What’s worse, there are also high rates of postpartum depression among older women.

In addition, it’s not a secret that generation gap does exist, which generally implies a deep chasm which opens up between parents and children. When older and younger individuals do not understand each other because of their different experiences, opinions, habits and behaviors, the generation gap arises naturally. In particular, the bigger the age difference, the deeper the gap. The detrimental effect of big age gap may be particularly apparent when kids becomes teenagers -- a difficult period for even young parents to deal with.

All in all, late childbearing has negative influence on both parents and children. Apart from that, this fact should not be overlooked that the greater the age gap between parents and children, the more likely it is to affect communication between them due to their differences of tastes, values, attitudes, etc. Therefore, my standpoint is that greater age gap between parents and children has more disadvantages than advantages.
