At present, it’s become a commonplace to see youngsters leaving their homes from villages to receive further education or pursue career opportunities in the cities. When it comes to the reasons why young people migrate from rural areas to study or work in the cities, there are a variety of push factors and pull factors behind this. From my perspective, the disadvantages of this development outweigh its advantages.

First and forest, fewer job opportunities and worse educational chances in the countryside are the most prominent push factors which force the young to go to the urban areas. Furthermore, economic incentives generally provide both the biggest push and pull factors for young migrants, who are drawn to the cities where they can maximize benefits. For example, a young rural man moving to a city will often find that the same job he did at his hometown is rewarded with higher wages in the new place. In addition, other pull factors consist of superior medical care, family ties or simply a personal fondness of a city.

Regardless of whatever factors, the migration of young people from rural areas to cities has negative influence on their homes and the cities as well. For one thing, the migration of people from agricultural areas to urban areas can lead to over population in cities. With the increasing number of rural young people pouring into cities, they put pressure on cities to offer jobs, houses and other services. For another, as youngsters emigrate from rural areas to urban areas for jobs, sustained economic growth in the countryside cannot be guaranteed due to labor shortage, which may have detrimental effect on the rural development in the long run.

All in all, young people may move voluntarily or involuntarily to the cities in search of better education or job opportunities. In spite of respective reasons, this migration will cause more negatives than positives.
