When it comes to public transport, I quite approve of the viewpoint that public transport should be funded by national, regional or local government through taxation so that it can be available free of charge for users. I am in favor of zero-fare public transport because it can bring innumerable benefits.

On the one hand, there is no gainsaying the fact that growing cities in the developing world frequently have traffic jams which can even choke up the whole expressways for days. What’s worse, over reliance on private cars also contribute to the rise of global warming. In addition, scientific evidence suggests that stationary cars in traffic jams cause a great deal of pollution, such as smog, noise, and carbon emissions and so on. The solution for these problems is free public transit, which will decrease congestion and pollution considerably.

On the other hand, when public transport is fare-free, it will become more accessible for low-income residents, which can in turn benefit social integration. Both businesses and job hunters can profit from it. Since inner cities and suburbs are connected by free public transport, companies and commuters will enjoy a smoother transportation with faster average road speeds and fewer traffic accidents because of fewer cars on the road. To be specific, if one train can take about 2000 cars off the road, a public transport system with 20 trains can take approximate 40,000 cars off the road. Besides, government may save expense from reduced wear and tear on roads due to less vehicles.

All in all, free public transport will decrease private cars and increase public access; as a consequence, it will bring ecological and social benefits for cities and citizens as well. Free public transport funded by the government will be beneficial for people and it will have positive effect on protecting the environment.
