Inside the Mind of Procrastinators
I'm a procrastinator. Whenever dealing with my job or articles, I'm used to procrastinating to the deadline. After trying lots of approaches recommended by the experts, I was desperate to realize they just did not work on my situation.
A few days ago, I watched a TED Talk on procrastination. By exerting below funny and vivid images, the speaker explained how the brains of procrastinators perform when they delay.
In the non-procrastinators' mind, the Rational Decision Maker will make the call. He can stick to the plan at any time and then lead us to do the right things.
However, in the procrastinators' mind, there's a naughty Instant Gratification Monkey, who will rob the console and suggest why we do not watch some TV programs, play the video games...
The good news is there's also a Panic Monster in procrastinators' mind. When approaching to the deadline, the Panic Monster will scare the Instant Gratification Monkey away, so that the Rational Decision-maker can always catch the deadline in the last minute.
However, not all the things we want to do have a specific deadline. It may be a family trip to you, or learning how to code, even calling an old friend...How can we push ourselves on those things too?
From my perspective, the most effective way is to set a deadline for yourself. That's why we joined the WO group. Procrastination may be a bad thing and is hard to conquer, but it's still better than giving up and doing nothing.
如果你也是拖延症患者……
我是个拖延症患者,特别严重。工作上的进度,007的作业雨,我都会拖延到不得不执行的时刻,每次把自己搞得焦头烂额。尝试了各种专家建议,我绝望地发现,他们就是对我不起作用。
前几天,我看了TED的一个演讲。作者用非常有趣又生动的图片,向我们展示了拖延症患者的大脑是如何运作的。
在非拖延症患者的大脑中,“理性决策者”负责掌舵、发号施令。他会按计划行事,选择做最正确的事。
然而在拖延症患者的脑袋里,会有一个特别调皮的“即时享受猴“,他总是干扰着“理性决策者”,提议着“看会电视吧”,“玩会游戏吧”,“躺着歇会吧”……
但好消息是,我们的大脑中还住着一个“恐慌大魔王”。一旦临近截止时间点时,“恐慌大魔王”就会跳出来吓跑“即时享受猴”,于是“理性决策者”终于能夺回主控权,在截止时间前做正事,完成工作。
然而,并非所有我们想做的事都有一个具体的截止日期。这样的事可能意味着一场家庭旅游,学习如何编程,甚至是打一个电话给老朋友……对这些没有截止日期的事,我们应该如何驱动自己呢?
在我看来,最行之有效的方式就是——给自己设置一个截止日期。这也是我们所有人参加007行动的原因。拖延症不是一件好事,也难以克服,但是比起放弃来说,拖延症也不是那么讨人厌了。
