At present, whether governments should pour a large quantity of money into restoring old buildings in big cities has triggered a widespread discussion. Some hold that the restoration of old buildings is worthwhile, while others assume that the fund should be spent on developing new houses and roads.
Admittedly, some dilapidated buildings in disrepair can be pulled down and replaced by new ones. Nevertheless, as for me, I approve of the view that those old historic buildings with cultural, architectural and aesthetic value are worth restoring and repairing. Furthermore, compared with the construction of new houses, if some ordinary traditional houses can be repaired at a lower cost, they should not be demolished hastily.
From an artistic point of view, some old structures are considered to be particularly worthy of maintenance for the benefit of present and future generations. Once historic structures are restored, governments can look for private donors to maintain them or even transform them into tourist spots or museums, which can contribute to the increase of governments’ financial revenue. Accordingly, tourism income can be invested to develop new residential apartments and construct roads for citizens.
Apart from old buildings with historic significance, if ordinary traditional dwellings are well redesigned and restored according to today’s practical needs, they can still be better used by inhabitants. In a sense, restoration itself not only preserves the historic character of old residences but also maximizes the use of existing materials and infrastructure, reduces waste and is environmentally friendly.
In summary, renovating historic old buildings perhaps seems costly for the time being, but it keeps the history and culture of a place alive, which may bring about a plurality of social and economic advantages in the long run. Besides, repairing old residential building will benefit occupants and governments as well.
