    Me: Hi ken, nice to meet you.

    Ken: Hi Edie, it is my pleasure to be of service to you. Do u like the sofa?

    Me: Yeah I guess. How much is it?

    Ken: Look at the price tag, Only 3999 it would be yours.

    Me: OMG! So expensive! Please tell me it is not the real price.

    Ken: It's just a price tag. Well, I'll give you a preferential price.300 yuan less.

    Me: Come on !It is still expensive!

    Ken: Another 200 less, 3499,the bottom line.

    Me: I cannot afford it,really.

    Ken: Well how much would you pay? Make a counter-offer anyway.

    Me: Ken, in Taobao I would spend only 2500 yuan for a similar sofa.

    Ken: No,We cannot make it. Our materials like cloth and sponge are much better than Taobao product ,that is why you come here ,right?

    Business negotiation is extremely common in our life. Where there is a deal, there is negotiation, no matter it is China’s entering WTO negotiation, or signing a sale agreement for your family ,or just buying foods in market. Almost every business deal requires a strategy for a successful business negotiation, so don’t be afraid, be an expert on it.

    Collect information before Negotiating

    The more details you know, the more likely you succeed. Review the background of the market , and understand the offerings and pricings from competitors,even the characters of your clients.For example as a buyer, I choose Fangcun furniture center ,but not Tianhe furniture shops, because it is further from downtown so I bargain more easily. And I searched on Internet to make a reasonable price section 2500-3000.

    Don’t offer a price first

    Business negotiation is a kind of psychological warfare ,and the one who talk later gains an competitive position-at least knows more about the offer from the other side. In the begining of sofa case, Ken didn’t get a exact offer but “Too expensive”complaints so he had to cut the price for 500.

    Make use of equal division strategy

    The truth is people often meet each other half way when they can't agree on a price. So when we are talking about equal division strategy,the main point is that at least you have to make your maximum budget price goes to the median. For example, 3000 is the median of 2500 and 3500. If I wanted to spend 3000 on sofa, I must keep the bidding price below 2500.

    There are so many elements in business negotiation, including price, quality, quantity,maintenance period,etc. While your primary focus is normally on price, you should always keep all the other components of the deal into your consideration. For example I got 2 extra cushions when accepting the counter-offer.
