❤❤在英语中定语从句有时候不一定是作形容词功能，有可能被理解为副词或者名词。

①We can read of things that happened 5.000 years ago in the Near East, where people first learned to write.
我们从书籍中可读到5,000 年前近东发生的事情，那里的人最早学会了写字。（lesson 1）
举俩个简单例子：
eg：I have to be very careful not to offend my boss,who could fire me at any time.
I have to be careful not to offend my boss,because he could fire me at any time.
我不敢招惹我们的老板，因为他随时可能开除我。
看似定语从句，实则逻辑理解为原因状语从句。
eg：The action,which has aroused universal disapproval,is nevertheless the only solution.
The action,although it has aroused universal disapproval,is nevertheless the only solution.
这个行动，尽管已经引起很多反对，但仍然是唯一的解决办法。
表面定语从句，实则理解为让步状语从句更为符合逻辑。
再举个栗子：
We endeavour to avoid the old, romantic idea of a gusher,which wastes oil and gas.（lesson 14）
We endeavour to avoid the old, romantic idea of a gusher,because it wastes oil and gas.
我们尽量避免使用陈旧天真的喷井方法，那样会浪费石油和天然气。
将定语从句理解为原因状语从句在逻辑上才好理解。
再再举个栗子：
The small ship,Elkor,which had been searching theBarentsSea for weeks,was on its way home.
The small ship,Elkor,after she had been searching theBarentsSea for weeks, was on its way home.
小船“埃尔科”号在巴伦支海搜寻了几个星期之后，正在返航途中。
将定语从句理解为after引导的时间状语从句在逻辑上才好理解。

so本句正确的理解逻辑为：

--------We can read of things that happened 5.000 years ago in the Near East,because people first learned to write there.
本句中 的定语从句其实是一个because引导的原因状语功能。
来造个句子加深理解：
最近几年大批农民工（migrant workers from the countryside）涌入大城市，因为他们在那里可以找到不错的工作并且养活家人。
The past few years witnessed the great influx of migrant workers from the countryside to big cities,where they could secure decent jobs and support their families.
积累写作表达：
1用物作主语：The past few years witnessed...
2大量涌入的...：the great influx of
3农民工：migrant workers from the countryside
4找到体面的工作：secure decent jobs
5养活家人：support one's family.
