一直都没搞清楚这里的“舍弃”是用desert还是abandon。
现在就来好好的分析一下“舍弃”style的单词们。
abandon 强调永远或完全放弃或抛弃人或事物
抛弃：If you abandon a place, thing, or person, you leave the place, thing, or person permanently or for a long time, especially when you should not do so.
例：
He claimed that his parents had abandoned him.
他声称他的父母抛弃了他。
中途放弃：If you abandon an activity or piece of work, you stop doing it before it is finished.
例：
Despite some difficulties, they're not going to abandon the plan.
尽管他们遇到了一些困难,但并不打算放弃这个计划。

abandon+人，就是“抛弃”；
abandon+物，就是“中止”。
desert 着重指违背法律责任和义务，或自己的信仰与誓言的行为。
（根据“名前动后”的小方法，desert作名词通常读作ˈdɛzət，作动词就读作dɪˈzɜːt且音节划分为 de+sert。）
抛弃：If someone deserts you, they go away and leave you, and no longer help or support you. 抛弃
例：
He deserted his wife and daughter.
他抛弃妻女。
放弃：If you desert something that you support, use, or are involved with, you stop supporting it, using it, or being involved with it.
例：
The sport is being written off as boring and predictable and the fans are deserting in droves.
这项运动因为枯燥且易于预测而不再吸引人，爱好者们正成批地退出。
forsake 侧重断绝感情上的依恋，自愿抛弃所喜欢的人或物，也指抛弃信仰或改掉恶习。
离弃；放弃 [文学性]：leave someone who needs or counts on you; leave in the lurch
例句：
I still love him and I would never forsake him.
我仍然爱他，我永远不会离弃他。
Forsake learning, and you will ruin yourself.
抛弃了学问便是毁了你们自己。
leave 是普通用词，指舍弃某事或某一职业，或终止同一某人的关系，但不涉及动机因果。
leave作抛弃讲，意思是“与…脱离关系; 离开 (某人)”。
英语释义：If you leave your husband, wife, or some other person with whom you have had a close relationship, you stop living with them or you end the relationship.
例：
He'll never leave you. You needn't worry.
他永远都不会离开你的，你不必担心。
He left his wife three months ago.
三个月前，他离开了妻子。
give up 多用于口语，侧重指没有希望或因外界压力而放弃。
放弃：If you give up, you decide that you cannot do something and stop trying to do it.
例：
He gave up the struggle in despair.他绝望地放弃了斗争。
The doctors had given her up but she made a remarkable recovery.医生们已放弃了治愈她的希望，而她却恢复得很好。
含有“放弃”意味的单词还有——
surrender主要指经过斗争或抵抗后被迫放弃，投降。
英语释义：yield up under pressure or from necessity; abandon possession of
比如：
In the end they were forced to surrender.
最后他们被迫投降了。
He agreed to surrender all claims to the property.
他同意放弃对那笔财产的一切权利要求。
quit 强调突然或出其不意的放弃，一般指“停止”。
比如：
He quit when he realized he could not win.
他认识到他不能取胜就放弃了。
cede 放弃；割让（领土）
英语释义：give over; surrender or relinquish to the physical control of another
比如：
The imperialist powers repeatedly forced the Qing government to cede territory and pay indemnities.
帝国主义列强多次强迫清朝政府割地赔款。
yield 放弃; 不再反对
英语释义：give up; cease opposition
比如：
He may yield control.
他可能放弃控制权。
法国爱情电影《两小无猜》里有句经典台词：好的爱情是你通过一个人看到整个世界，坏的爱情是你为了一个人舍弃世界。
舍弃世界是一个很严肃的事情，当你爱错了人，当你执迷不悔的时候，你会舍弃很多东西，很多你曾经热爱的人或物。不过我并不觉得这里有责难的意思，经历是一种财富，爱错了，所以成长，所以长大。
再来看一下desert和abandon的区别：
desert多含非难的意味：①抛弃妻子，舆论谴责；②背叛祖国，法律不容；③擅离职守，违反纪律。
abandon强调完全、永远地放弃，尤其是指遗弃以前感兴趣或负有责任的人或物。
所以，这里的“舍弃”应该用abandon来表达。
