At present, with the rapid development of the internet and computer technology, individuals can appreciate historical relics and artistic work online; therefore, some assume that it is not necessary for people to visit public museums and art galleries.

As for me, I strongly incline to the standpoint that although internet technology provides a more usable and accessible way, virtual museums and art galleries can never replace real ones.

First and foremost, the role of a museum or a gallery is threefold: to collect historical, classical, valuable objects and works of art; to keep them safe and preserve them for future generations; and to display and interpret them. In general, museums and galleries can cater to all age groups and offer a wide range of interactive exhibitions and educational opportunities. As a consequence, when parents take their children out for sightseeing, they always include visiting local museums and galleries as their necessary itineraries.

Furthermore, museums and galleries are like large three-dimensional books. When someone travels in a strange place, visiting the local museum is a wonderful channel to get a comprehensive knowledge of that region as well as a precious glimpse of the rare exhibitions there. In a sense, a museum is a potted history of local culture and tradition; so is a gallery. Besides, a great way to encourage a child to love art is by taking him or her to a museum or a gallery, which will open the door to a whole new world.

In conclusion, despite the popularity of computer technology, visiting museums and galleries online is totally different from experiencing them on the spot. In a nutshell, museums and galleries are still indispensable and irreplaceable.
