Around 25 years ago I did start to research sleep and all that was connected with it. One of the aspects is dreams. How much influence do dreams have on the reality of our life? Do they predict, process or have another function?
In all these years I discovered that dreams fulfill multiple functions and not have only one. The complexity of the dream is created through the fact that we do not have just one but many dreams every night. People who do not dream wake up tired, disoriented or worse. Dreaming is a need for all our everyday activities. A most interesting fact is that people who do not have any dream are able to function at all.
Sleep is cut in different around 90 minutes during cycles. During each cycle, the sleep passes through different intensities (dept) of sleep. In phase 4 there is a very deep brain activity going on which we are still researching as the current thought is that in this phase we do process memory and make different neural connections. An interesting process that needs more attention.
REM sleep is the time of dreaming. Most people who wake up in their REM sleep remember the dream. Some dreams have a link to our daily life, to reality. Most do not. The big question is if our dreams do influence our decision making? The answer is yes. From research, it is proven that every person has dreams to remember and did let dreams, conscious or unconsciously, guide them in behavior and decision. Is this an important fact?
Yes, the dream is often considered by scientist as irrational and unrelated to specific events but it proved that every person did feel the dream as a guide for a decision. Even the most rigorous scientist who considers him/her self as a hardliner knows it has had dreams that brought solutions to certain problems, gave new visions or even changed perspectives. Dreams have a strong influence on life, even stronger than most will ever acknowledge.
Is it possible to create dreams, to manipulate the content or expose the content visually? Dreams are interesting because of their content. Most dreams are only visual. It is very rare that dreams have a vocal, sound, smell or taste component.
