While the December jobs report was lukewarm, the goods-sector details of the report were solid, pointing to a strong showing for industrial production in the month. Manufacturing employment increased 25k in December, and job gains for this sector in the final quarter of the year were the strongest since the first quarter of 2012. A heady pace of activity was further expressed by the rebound in the manufacturing ISM in the month. Combined with a cold-snap at the end of December, which likely drove utility output higher, Bloomberg Economics sees upside risks to the consensus forecast.
A solid increase in output should result in further increases in capacity utilization, a metric which tends to be a useful bellwether for business investment spending.
