Antithesis

n. 对立面；对照；对仗

Antithesis简单说就是站在对立面的人或事。例如"love is the antithesis of selfishness"，“learning is the antithesis of doubting". 它还常常用来说明人格的矛盾，比如：“As an actress, she is quite the antithesis of her giddy and frivolous character"。在商业上，头对头的竞争对手也被称为antithesis，例如宝马是奔驰的antithesis。在哲学中的常见概念“二元对立”就被称为Dualistic Antithesis。

这个词的词根Thesis，以及Antithesis，Synthesis构成了辩证逻辑中三个基本过程，分别是正题、反题和合成。亚理斯多德认为使用Antithesis的辩证过程可以让听众更好地理解辩题，将对立的两个论述放到一起能够让做出正确的选择更加容易。

它的形容词antithetical是“对立的”意思，例如antithetical ideas（相反的想法），antithetical form（对立的形式）。中华文化中的对联一般被翻译为Antithetical Couplet，但其实英语文学中也有目标一致的表达说法，比如：

Many are called, but few are chosen

Man proposes; God disposes.

Antitheism（无神论）看似是这个词的变形，但其实不是，它是anti和theism（有神论）的组合。

All this makes Brazil the antithesis of China.
这一切都使得巴西成为中国的对照。

Critics attack video games as the antithesis of a fit lifestyle.
批评家们抨击视频游戏，把它做为健康生活的对立面。
