The term 5G is simply the name given to the next generation in wireless cellular technology, which is the fifth. Like the jump from DSL to fiber Internet, the move to 5G will bring with itfaster data speeds—a hundred-fold increase over today’s standards—as well as lower latency (a measure of delayed response) and increased support for even more connected devices. Change is coming, but carriers will first have to installmore cellular equipment to transmit higher frequencies over shorter distances. In addition, wireless signals travel on the electromagnetic spectrum—just the same way radio, light and all your favorite waves do—and for 5G to work, carriers need to use a wider array of that spectrumthan they’ve needed access to in the past. They’ll have to acquire it from other companies or the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates commercial use of the spectrum.
