Compared with China, the literary life of Britain is short, but British literature has it brilliance from the special geographically and historically point of view. So lets talk about the history of British literature briefly.

The British literature can be divided into different period. In the middle age, during the Anglo-Saxon period, British nourished epic The song of Beowulf.

Maybe someone would ask why did not China produce epic. I thought that China had formed its written language long time ago and the epic like Beowulf was passed down in it oral form.

Besides, many ethic minorities in China had their own epics. The Anglo-Norman period had started after Norman conquer, which formed a new literature-romance that seeped into England from France.

The romance mainly talk about the adventure and love affairs of knights and the stories mainly covered three countries: England, France and ancient Greek or Roman.

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is a good example. The middle age was regarded as dark age,but during this age, the father of English poetry, Geoffrey Chaucer came into the historical stage and was famous for its masterpiece The Canterbury Tales.

Among the many tales, what impressed me most was a woman who tried her best to dominate her husband, which seemed to me the first feminist who seeks her own power during the patriarchal societies.

In the Renaissance, Shakespeare always took all stage light of that age and eclipsed others. His drama represented the best literature of the Renaissance.

The appearance of bourgeois was engaged in fighting with the feudalism, but bourgeois were too weak to shatter the feudalism and they appealed classical books of ancient Greek and Roman classic books to free people’s mind,so the humanism became the useful weapon of bourgeois and the light of civilization appeared during the dark night.

Expect William Shakespeare, the Francis beacon also was famous for its essays. For example, Of Study expressed his viewpoints towards the benefit of the books, and how to read different books according to their value.

The use of rhetoric devices were also appealing and made the whole passage more persuasive and convincing and we can see its beauty lies in the following sentences:”Studies serve for delight, for ornament and for ability”, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be chewed and digested” and “Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man,and writing an exact man”.
