The Enchantment of Creeks--Peter

Creeks don't get named for Civil War generals of Indian chiefs. They take their names from whatever's handy:Rock Creek,Mill Creek, or Mud Creek.

A creek is very like a stream but even faster, though less reliable as it can dry up...it's often run-off from the snow.(释义摘自作业帮)

An Ohio woman feels suddenly at home again as she remembers catching crayfish in the creek behind her parent's house.

eg. Spicy crayfish is a necessity for a midnight meal.

On hot summer days the quiet water flowed clear and cold over gravel bars where I fished for trout.

Nothing historic ever happens in these recollected creeks. But their persistence in memory suggests that creeks are bigger than they seem, more a part of our hearts and minds than mighty rivers.

While rivers are heavy with sophistication and sediment, creeks are clear, innocent, boisterous, full of dream and promise. A child can wade across them without a parent's cautions. You can go it alone, jig for crayfish, swing from ropes along the bank. Greeks belong to childhood, drawing you into the wider world, teaching you the curve of the earth.

    Sophistication

Sophistication is the quality of being intelligent and knowing a lot, so that you are able to understand complicated situations.

Poet Robert Frost wrote:'It flows between us,over us,and with us. And it is time, strength, tone, light, life, and love.'

How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!/ Here will we sit and let sounds of music/ Creep in our ears.(出自威尼斯商人)

The pursuit liquefies my citified haste and lifts weight from my shoulders.

citified: (derogatory贬义) having the customs, manners, or dress of city people 有都市风情的

I wonder if their verse and music, like the music of crickets, are in some way voices of the moon. With such thoughts, my citified confusions melt into the quiet of the night.
