子曰：「弟子入則孝，出則弟，謹而信，汎愛眾，而親仁。行有餘力，則以學文。」
1.“弟（悌）”的翻译。善事父母曰孝，善事兄长曰弟。指的是“敬爱、顺从兄长”。James Legge翻译为“respectful to his elders”，取了它的原意，而辜鸿铭和许渊冲都将意义泛化了，许氏翻译为“respectful”，辜氏翻译为“a good citizen”（好公民）。
2.“文”的翻译。三人的翻译各不相同。James Legge翻译为“polite studies”，“polite”有“高雅的；上流的”意思，也就是说要学习上流社会的东西，至于具体学什么，没有明说。辜鸿铭则指出来是“literary pursuits”。 literary意思是“文学”，也就是要学文学。许渊冲翻译为“arts”，它在古代有“学问、知识”的意思，也就是在道德修养方面做好了之后，如果还有余力，可以去做学问。另外，许先生似乎犯了个语法错误。“If he has time to spare when his duties are done, he may use it to learn arts.”句中的“it”似乎是想指代“duties”，既然是复数概念，宜用“them”来指代。James和辜氏都用的“them”。
杨伯峻在《论语译注》里将“文”翻译为“文献知识”，主要有诗、书、礼、乐等文化知识。《论语注疏》里认为，“文”指的是六经。（“古之遗文”者，则《诗》、《书》、《礼》、《乐》、《易》、《春秋》六经是也。）
【James Legge】The Master said, "A youth, when at home, should be filial, and, abroad, respectful to his elders. He should be earnest and truthful. He should overflow in love to all, and cultivate the friendship of the good. When he has time and opportunity, after the performance of these things, he should employ them in polite studies."
【辜鸿铭】Confucius remarked,“A young man, when at home, should be a good son; when out in the world, a good citizen. He should be circumspect and truthful. He should be in sympathy with all men, but intimate with men of moral character. If he has time and opportunity to spare, after the performance of these duties, he should then employ them in literary pursuits.”
【许渊冲】A young man, said the Master, should be filial at home and respectful abroad, cautious and trustworthy, affectionate towards all and intimate with the good. If he has time to spare when his duties are done, he may use it to learn arts.
