Some individuals contend that governments should not fund international aid when there are vulnerable groups within their own countries. In my opinion, I quite disapprove of this view. While it is important to help disadvantaged groups at home, it is also the duty of governments as members of the global community to subsidize international assistance in regions of need, such as those of war, famine, and plague.

Admittedly, the mark of a civilized society is that it looks after its weakest members. There is a general perception that it is the responsibility of governments to change the plight of the needy through offering job opportunities, provide relief subsidies, or holding training and educational classes. Nevertheless, the government of a country should not only address the needs of the underprivileged at home but also have the obligation to pay money for international assistance to other places suffering from natural and man-made disasters.

First and foremost, when there is a major catastrophe somewhere on the earth, such as tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption and so on, countless people will become homeless. Under these circumstances, it is urgent for governments to join hands to render all kinds of assistance financially to refugees in the disaster-stricken area. Furthermore, in today’s world, since the relationship between countries is increasingly close and interrelated, no country can be independent of the world integration. Just as neighbors must look out for each other, so must nations. Therefore, it is essential for governments to participate in the provision of international financial assistance.

In addition, it is an irrefutable fact that wealth or poverty of a nation depends primarily on intrinsic factors including geography, climate, and availability of resources. Countries with scarce natural resources are usually poorer than those with abundant resources. For example, apart from hot and dry conditions, lack of access to clean and abundant water sources deprives countries in Central Africa of economic opportunities, which is a primary factor leading to perpetual poverty. Hence, they desperately need international help from governments of other wealthy nations.

All in all, for any government, granting international aid is as significant as helping the vulnerable at home because every country is a member of the global village and countries should share difficulties with each other.
