【汉译英】「拓展」和「迈进」要怎么翻译呢？

……积极拓展双边和多边海洋合作，向海洋强国的目标迈进。

参考翻译：……actively expand bilateral and multilateral maritime cooperation, and move closer to achieving the goal of building China into a maritime power.

拓展

看到拓展，就会想到一组近义词：expand 和 extent，他们的词形和词义都非常接近，是一对近义词，那他们之间有什么区别呢？

expand is to change (something) from a smaller form and/or size to a larger one while extend is to increase in extent.

从这个解释可以看出，expand 有一个「从小到大」的概念，这是 extend 所没有的。

比如这个例句：

● You can expand this compact umbrella to cover a large table.

伞在不用的时候是收起来的，因此「打开」的这个动作，是一个从小体积到大体积的过程，因此用 expand 这个词就非常贴切了，而不能用 extend 。

同样地，在代书运算里，将一个式子「展开」，也用到的是 expand ，比如这个例句：

在原文中，我们并不是没有和别的国家有双边和多边的合作，只是原来的合作也许范围和领域比较小，现在需要进一步扩大合作，因此用 expand 是合适的。

迈进

在参考译文中，「迈进」一词用了 move closer to 这个表达，对应「目标」这个对象，是非常恰当的。

除此之外，「迈进」还有其他的表达方式。

首先，当我们说「迈进一大步」的时候，就可以用 take a big stride forward 这个表达。这里的「一大步」如果用 step 来表达的话，就需要用一个表示跨越的动词来表达。而 stride 和 step 相比，本身就具有「一大步」的含义，因此显得更加贴切。

除了和 take 搭配实用，stride 还可以和 advance 一起使用，但介词试用的是 with，advance with big strides 。

advance 这个词也可以单独来表达前进的含义，例如这个句子：

这项发现标志着空间技术向前迈进了一大步。
The discovery marks a great advance in space technology.

另外，我们可以用一个动词，forge， 来表达。 forge 的意思是稳步前行，比如我们要表达「向着四个现代化的宏伟目标迈进」这个句子，就可以说 forge ahead toward the great goal of the four modernizations，也就是 forge ahead toward 的用法。
