• 熟词生义 •
1. 「demand」：
demand常见：“要求”，此处意思：“询问”
e.g. I always have the courage to demand the truth.
2. 「post」：
常见：“邮件”和“邮寄”，此处“桩子，柱子”。
原句：And if you are good I will give you a string, too, so that you can tie him during the day, and a post to tie him to.
e.g. Eddie parked his cycle against a post.
3. 「subject」：
常见：“科目”、“话题，主主题”、“服从于”，此处意思：“臣民”。
e.g. His subjects regarded him as a great monarch.
• 句子赏析 •
1. It was from words dropped by chance that, little by little, everything was revealed to me.
我就只能从他不经意的言语中了解他的一切。
「 drop」：此处不是掉落、坠机意思，而是普通的speak
（因为作者和小王子之间的对话是一点点进行的，所以大家可以联想一下drop的画面感——小王子一句一句的蹦出话来，是不是要比speak形象得多？）
「 by chance」：原意是“意外地”，也是指小王子有意无意说出的话
「 little by little」：一点一点地
「 sth. be revealed to sb.」reveal常用被动，表示“某事逐渐表露在某人面前”。
e.g.The secret was revealed to the president. 总统知道了这个秘密。
2. And the little prince broke into a lovely peal of laughter, which irritated me very much. I like my misfortunes to be taken seriously.
「break into laughter」“突然大笑出来”。这是一个很常见的搭配，还可以用tears代替laughter，
break into tears 表示大哭。
「irritate」“激怒”，
「misfortunes to be taken seriously」意为，我希望自己遇到的不幸能够让小王子认真对待。（misfortunes）。
「a peal of」：意为“一阵、一片”，通常表示比较大的声音，
来个栗子：a peal of thunder：一阵雷声
3. At that moment I caught a gleam of light in the impenetrable mystery of his presence.
「presence」：有“存在”的意思，但此处理解为“出现”显然更通顺合理。
4. “It is true that on that you can’t have come from very far away…”
两个「that」，第一个没有具体含义。第二个「that」指代作者坏掉的飞机。「on that」就是 “乘坐飞机”。因为飞机已经坏了，所以小王子就觉得，嗯，坐这么个坏掉的“玩意儿”，肯定不会是从很远的地方来的。
5. Then, taking my sheep out of his pocket, he buried himself in the contemplation of his treasure.
「the contemplation of sth.」：“对某物深思”。
「buried oneself in」：bury这个词可以想象一下,原意是埋葬的意思, 就是一种非常生动的说法，表明“这个人正忙着做某件事”。栗子如下：He buries himself in lots of work. 他忙着做自己的工作。
6. The thing that is so good about the box you have given me is that at night he can use it as his house.
「so good... that… 」表示“太好了…以至于…”，
整句话的大意是：你给我的那个盒子好处就在于，小羊在晚上可以用它当房子。

Straight ahead of him, nobody can go very far…，“走两步就到头了。”
至于这个「Straight ahead of him」，这么说吧，大家给别人指路的时候会说：go straight along the street. 就是沿着这条街一直走，ahead 是“向前”的意思，所以「Straight ahead of him」就是一直往前。

「subjects 」：表示“所有的民众”。「under pain of death」：表示“就是如果违抗就以死刑处置”。

「on account of」 ：“因为”。举个例子， I failed the exam on account of my illness. 考试失败是因为我生病了。
10. To those who understand life, that would have given a much greater air of truth to my story.
对于真正懂得生命意义的人来说，他们会觉得我这样的方式（that）也会为我的故事（to my story）带来很强的真实性（given a much greater air of truth）。
「air of sth.」此处大家可以想象一下，空气就是一种看不见摸不到的感觉吧，所以air其实就是feel，air of sth.就是“某物带来的感觉”。
11. For I do not want anyone to read my book carelessly，I have suffered too much grief in setting down these memories.
「suffer too much in doing sth.」:“为做某事而感到难过／深受折磨”。
