“WHAT AN EXTRAORDINARY PLACE!” cried Lucy.
感叹句:what+(a/an)+(adj.)+n.(可数的时候带上a/an,不可数省去)+(主+谓,通常这部分可省)
I expect you’ve seen someone put a lighted match to a bit of newspaper which is propped up in a grate against an unlit fire.
a bit of +n.
eg.He is a bit of a coward. 【c】
I have a bit of money left.【u】
prop v.
grate n.
Then he opened a great red mouth, warm and living, and gave a prodigious yawn.
prodigious: (literary) Something that is prodigious is very large or impressive.
Everywhere the statues were coming to life.
come to life此处指苏醒过来,焕发活力。
or that some magic in the house had come to life and was chasing them into Narnia—
但在此处,come to life是指起作用,显灵
Instead of the deadly silence the whole place rang with the sound of happy roarings, brayings, yelpings, barkings, squealings, cooings, neighings, stampings, shouts, hurrahs, songs and laughter.
bray v.驴叫 yelp v. 尖叫 squeal v.号叫
coo v.
Once the feet are put right, all the rest of him will follow.
Bless me! I must have been asleep.
It’s a sight well worth looking at.
同类常见be good at doing, be well in doing,均可+n./pron./ving
Look alive, everyone. Up stairs and down stairs and in my lady’s chamber! Leave no corner un-searched. You never know where some poor prisoner may be concealed.
和后文出现的look lively是一样的意思to go or move quickly : to hurry
Look lively and sort yourselves.
my lady's chamber Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
conceal v.
The little chap was none the worse for having been a statue and was of course very interested in all she had to tell him.
he bawled up at the Giant. “Hi! You up there,” he roared.
“Giant Rumblebuffin, if it please your honor,” said the Giant, once more touching his cap.
bawl up at sb.
The whole castle stood empty with every door and window open and the light and the sweet spring air flooding into all the dark and evil places which needed them so badly.(定从,修饰places)
flood into涌入
“Stand well away from the gates, all you little ‘uns.”
此处是all you little ones
后面还出现了“Comes of being out of condition. I suppose neither of you young ladies has such a thing as a pocket-handkerchee about you?”口袋手帕, handkerchief(注意此处out of condition此处是指由于条件差,一般指健康状况不佳)
Thank you, Missie,应该是Miss
At this point Aslan clapped his paws together and called for silence.
1. To appear, as on someone else's premises, in order to get: My chauffeur will call for you at seven.
2. To be an appropriate occasion for: This news calls for champagne.
3. To require; demand: work that calls for patience.

The most pleased of the lot was the other lion who kept running about everywhere pretending to be very busy but really in order to say to everyone he met, ...
the lot : the party, the group, the crowd
run about:run around
'No side, no stand-off-ishness. Us Lions. That meant him and me.” At least he went on saying this till Aslan had loaded him up with three dwarfs, one dryad, two rabbits, and a hedgehog. That steadied him a bit.
have no side 不拿架子
stand-off-ishness: a disposition to be distant and unsympathetic in manner.
load sb. up with sth.
It was Peter she was fightin - both of them going at it so hard that Lucy could hardly make out what was happening; she only saw the stone knife and Peter's sword flashing so quickly that they looked like three knives and three swords.
make out 弄清楚,明白
so ...that...
Then Lion and Witch had rolled over together but with the Witch underneath; and at the same moment all war-like creatures whom Aslan had led from the Witch's house rushed madly on the enemy lines, dwarfs with their battleaxes, dogs with teeth, the Giant with his club (and his feet also crushed dozens of the foe), unicorns with their horns, centaurs with swords and hoofs.
battle+ax→n.
