behind sunglasses
I doze and wake…
the friendly man talks on

low tide:

stoop

January sun…
the cotton fields
dotted with leftovers

Quiet afternoon:
water shadows
on the pine bark.

Awakening…
the cold fresh scent:
new snow.

she turns the child
to brush her hair
with the wind

twilight
taking
the trees

family get-together
all the eyes all the feelers
all the hands tearing shrimp

3 beetles line up
under the screen door...
cold morning

in a pecan grove
wandering spring shadows
cows & blackbirds

sundown in the empty bar
the player-piano keys
Begin

my spade turns
the dark earth lets in
some sun

following me
deeper into my quilt
the wren's song

the slow day…
in the empty motel corridor
a stack of dirty dishes
